MYS 2024, Day 2: Tomasz Gackoski of AMPROS on hybrid propulsion systems, with some very interesting and useful real life examples and studies of energy consumption onboard and the variables involved - not just theory but real-world testing. Key takeaways for me included: - Most of the energy on superyachts is used for hotel loads not transportation - For a typical 150' 200GT yacht, crews tell us they burn through 650 litres of diesel PER DAY for hotel loads and a further 700 litres PER DAY for transportation (if not sailing) - Traditional propulsion presents challenges including constant running of generators, heat generation in machinery room 24/7, maintenance, noise and vibrations - The environmental benefits of hybrid systems include low hours of ICE running, more efficient use of ICE, variable RPM generators - Solar is not the answer (sadly) - it would require 1000m2 of photovolatic panels (with tech as it is today) for a 200GT vessel - With hydrogeneration a resonable 10kn is achieveable, with fast, lightweight yachts generating more power - We should be thinking about power generation first, then propulsion. Work out how much energy is needed and then calculate the size of the propeller. - Electric is the future, hybrid is the intermediate step. - Superyachts use a LOT of energy.
