  • Some experts say. "Expansion Joints are CRITICAL components in a piping system." Yet others claim, "Expansion Joints are NOT necessary in a piping system." 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲? Designing Expansion Joints requires extensive experience and expertise, particularly in calculating and engineering the best solution, material selection, manufacturing, and testing. These demands far exceed those of alternative solutions. 💡However, a sound and efficient Expansion Joint designs acts to prolong the #servicelife of pipe systems and reduce the risk of downtime for additional maintenance and repair.   • Design codes and standards in #piping design. 📣It is very important for piping designers and engineers to be aware of these design codes, • EN 14917 – European standard specifies the requirements for the design, manufacture and installation of metal bellows and expansion joints for pressure applications. • EN 13445 – Similarly applicable for unified pressure vessels. that provide rules for the design, fabrication, and inspection of pressure vessels. • EN 13480 – Similarly, specifies the requirements for industrial piping systems and support, including safety systems, made of metallic materials. It is applicable to metallic piping above ground, ducted or underground. • AD 2000 – German code of practice for pressure vessel design and manufacture, which was prepared by a working group of multiple associations. • ASME B31.1 – An American National Standard, a power piping code. It prescribes minimum requirements for the design material, fabrication, erection, test, inspection, operation, and maintenance of power piping systems. • ASME B31.3 – Similar to the above, this section covers the practices used in the construction process of piping systems. • ASME VII Div. I – Similarly, provide the rules for the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels. • EJMA – A design code made by the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association. The standard provides rules for the design, manufacture, and safe installation of metallic expansion joints.   • Understanding the application and considerations for Expansion Joints with 𝐭𝐢𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐬. Tied or Restrained Expansion Joints are designed with tie rods, hinges or gimbals. By using tied restrained Expansion Joints, the reaction force from pressure can be ignored due to the fact that pressure will be absorbed in the tie rods/ restraints. 👇 For example, Lateral Expansion Joints are mounted with tie rods to restrain the #axial movement while allowing only #lateral movements. Here, the number of tie rods could be defined by facts such as pressure, temperature etc which impact on the static and dynamic calculations. Depending on the forces calculated, it could be designed with 2 , 3 or more tie rods. If only two tie rods are needed, the Expansion Joint may also absorb angular movements. In that case, the placement of tie rods must be perpendicular to the #angular movement plane. Moreover, there could be situations where tie rods are used to prevent axial movements. A piping configuration that permits the use of adapted tie rods to prevent axial movements frequently simplifies and reduces the cost of the installation. As such, there are many aspects to be considered when using tie rods with Expansion Joints.   • "𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱" design is one of the fascinated method use in Expansion Joint designs in high-pressure applications. Ring Reinforced Expansion Joint design consists of #reinforcement rings. Equalising reinforcement rings are solid stainless-steel rings fitted externally on the bellows of the  Expansion Joints. 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 The purpose of the reinforcement rings is to reinforce the bellows against internal pressure. By adding moment of inertia to the bellows cross-section, this counteracts the bellows ability to blow out or buckle (also called #squirm) and enhances its stability and pressure integrity. The reinforcement rings are precisely machined so they fit into the root between each of the bellow convolutions. By supporting a multi-layered Expansion Joint Bellows with Ring Reinforcement, an optimum combination of both pressure integrity and service life can be achieved. ❗𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Bellows with reinforcing rings can be made for any type of Expansion Joint (Axial, Lateral or Angular etc.) However, there are some limitations, such as reinforced bellows could significantly increase the #stiffness of the bellows and limited movement properties. Therefore, it has to be customized and engineered carefully, depending on the project requirements.     • a closer view of a Ring Reinforced Expansion Joint design consists of #reinforcement rings.
  • We designed this Expansion Joint for Coal-fired 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 collaborating with #BelmanExpansionJoints. This solution of 41 sets of Coal Dust Piping bellows was analyzed, solved and engineered by Belman Design for a Polish Power Plant. It was important to find a solution which prevented coal dust emissions into the atmosphere. The design parameters were also critical due to the location of the Coal Dust Piping Bellows on the boiler's pulverized fuel ducts. In addition, 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭 is extremely abrasive and can clog the bellows of the Coal Dust Piping Bellows. For that reason, a special Coal Dust Piping Bellow solution was required. Using Belman Design's in-house engineering tools, including ANSYS Inventor, Rohr2 etc., we could accurately define the type and size of movements. Belman Design could then model the optimal Expansion Bellows configuration. In this case, it consisted of an Expansion Joint incorporating a flanged pipe section between two Angular Expansion Joints. Belman Design's customized product was engineered to cater to each movement plane and the relevant location. This resulted in a more 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 with a longer life cycle and operating life. 🔧 With this engineered solution, we could achieve the goal by preventing coal dust emissions between the mill and the burner, contributing to reducing pollution and environmental issues for the plant.   • A correctly dimensioned and properly installed Expansion Bellow does 𝐍𝐎𝐓 require any special #maintenance. Expansion Bellows are in a certain way is maintenance free than its alternatives as a correctly dimensioned and appropriately installed compensator does not require any special maintenance other than the inspection that is carried out for the other parts of the pipe system in which the compensator is installed. 📌Our recommendation is that to carry out ongoing inspection of the pipe system throughout its service life as usual with the focus of checking the presence of rust, whether the parts have become loose and so on. Every application has its own practice of inspection frequency however the inspection frequency is determined on an individual basis based on the function of the system, occurring loads etc. There is no guarantee that inspections could result in no damage, but it does significantly reduce the risk. Since expansion bellows are customized for different applications, therefore it is difficult to provide a common maintenance direction, but these could be some typical causes for Expansion Joint failures such as shipping and handling damages, installation damages and installation errors, operational damages including corrosion, fatigue failure, torsion so on.
