Informacje
The Design Educates Awards recognize, showcase, and promote globally the best ideas and implementations of architecture and design that can educate. The design itself may provide an informative and educational layer that guides us through the increasing complexity of our environment. It can showcase specific possibilities and challenges, explain sociocultural factors and influences, or even outline new scenarios for future development. Each year, the esteemed panel of judges selects the outstanding ideas and implementations in the categories of architectural design, product design, universal design, and responsive design. The awards are a multidisciplinary call for ideas and implementations in the categories of (1) architectural design,(2) product design, (3) universal design, and (4) responsive design. Deliberation about the entries will consist of two phases: (1) selection of the finalists and (2) selection of winners and laureates of honorable mentions. The theme of the awards has been inspired by the research called ‘Educating Buildings’ (‘Bildende Bauten’) by Dr. Peter Kuczia.

Honorable mention in Architectural Design 2024 Ripple Location: Tokyo Team: Takatoku Nishi On sunny days, when the sun shines and a certain amount of wind blows, light is led into the space from the pipes in the ceiling, creating a phenomenon of light that looks like drops falling onto the surface of the water. The light constantly moves with the wind and falls to reveal new sights. This architectural space is a remarkable manifestation of the seasonal, daily and time-of-day changes caused by the atmosphere, and the sights that can be experienced differ depending on the time of day when you visit. Honorable mention in Architectural Design 2024 Tomac Winery Company name: Dva arhitekta ĆURKOVIĆ d.o.o. Location: Donja Reka Team: The office Dva arhitekta was established in 1992. Today it operates as two individual offices in Zagreb. Design team: Tomislav Ćurković, Zoran Zidarić, Marko Galić and Barbara Vuković. "NATURAL / UNINHIBITED Relying on tradition, preserving our grandfather's values, and using ancient but modernized methods and related experiences is the way to natural and uninhibited wine. We knew that architecture should follow such thinking. To make a wine without interventions, a biodynamic winemaker should use grapes the way nature produces them. Just like that, we used each building material in its raw naturalness." Honorable mention in Architectural Design 2024 Reciprocal House Company name: GIANNI BOTSFORD ARCHITECTS LIMITED Location: London, UK Team: Architect: Gianni Botsford Architects Structural Engineer: TALL M & E Engineer: Integration Quantity Surveyor: Measur Landscape Architect: FLLO Contractor: New Wave Metal Fabricator: Weber Industries "Reciprocal House is ‘locally adapted’ to its context much like a species would adapt and evolve to perform better in differing contexts. This approach, starting with the forensic analysis of a site, whether in an urban setting or not, allows nature to lead the design process, providing living spaces embracing light, views, fresh air and privacy. Cities can successfully density if these issues are incorporated as a driver for a project and an understanding that sustainability starts by providing somewhere one would want to live. In 1968, the Architect Norman Foster extended a former coach house behind a pub in Hampstead, London, with a lightweight structure of steel, concrete blocks and large span glazing. It is one of the first built structures by Foster & Partners and clearly expresses the approach they would take with an uncompromising simplicity, directness and economy of means." Honorable mention in Architectural Design 2024 Initiative Rising Star - Schulgebäude für Hopley, Simbabwe Company name: Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e. V. Location: Harare, Zimbabwe Team: Peter Bauer, Sonja Bian, Berta Franziska Bilger, Claudia Gajda, Patrick Jagiella, Yannik Kremer, Verena Metzger, Lukas Mütze, Alessa Preiss, Carina Waiblinger, Robert Wipperfürth, Kristina Ziadeh "The Rising Star School in Hopley, a district of Harare, forms a new center primarily for the children, but also for the adults of the community. Founded in 2010 and growing continuously, this primary school becomes a landmark in the vicinity of smaller residential building structures after the completion of the school building. The expressive appearance of the building through the massive, but - depending on the perspective - filigree architecture is characterised by round arches. The lessons take place under the arches and thus form a characteristic feature in the environment of the otherwise uniformly built Zimbabwean schools. A special feature during the seven construction phases over the last seven years is the everyday coexistence: the children go already to class of the previously completed phase, while the builders work on the next phase right next door. This cooperation shows not only mutual respect but also the acceptance of challenges and continuous support. It's hard to believe that the new school building is entirely handcrafted. Honorable mention in Architectural Design 2024 Fire Department and Daycare Center Waldshut-Tiengen Location: Robert-Gerwig-Str. 19 79761 Waldshut-Tiengen Team: Martin Bächle Karin Meid-Bächle Hanna Diesch (projektverantwortliche Mitarbeiterin) Alexandra Maria Bolocan (projektverantwortliche Mitarbeiterin) Achim Schreiner freier Architekt (Bauleitung) "The site for the new fire station and daycare center project in waldshut is prominently located at the southern end of a row of large flat buildings, supermarkets and parking garages, in the immediate vicinity of the main railway station and in the visual axis of the southern entrance to the town of waldshut. the new building fits in with the existing buildings and is self-confident in terms of shape and color. The building lines are precisely continued on the first floor and upper floor of the western side of robert-gerwig-straße. on the eastern side of robert-gerwig-straße, the incoming sloping façade was designed in an alternation of orthogonal and sloping building edges. The new building was developed as a compact structure with two equal and covered entrances for the fire department to the west and the daycare center to the east. Through a meandering interplay of closed mural and structural façades, the entrances are designed with projecting upper floors and façade changes depending on the function. The result is an urbanistically striking brick-red building that corresponds to the contents of the fire department and the day care center.
