During the recent 149th MPEG meeting in Geneva, our strong team included the head of the Polish delegation prof. Marek Domański, vice dean Damian Karwowski (our CABAC expert!), our director Dawid Mieloch, head of the Multimedia Laboratory Olgierd Stankiewicz, immersive video expert Adrian Dziembowski, and soon-to-be PhD Sławomir Różek. Three proposals from our Poznan University of Technology team were adopted for the prospective Video Coding for Machines (VCM) 🤖 standard! These proposals include an innovative neural-network-based chroma reconstruction - the VCM normative compression tool that enables synthetic reconstruction of color at the decoder side instead of direct transmission 🐻❄️-> 🌈 -> 🐻. We also managed to interest the JVET (Joint Video Experts Team) experts with our method of adaptive picture mirroring 🙂/🙃. This method showed one of the highest gains in compression efficiency of all proposals presented in the meeting, all with no change in the decoding time! JVET will test the method in the upcoming exploration experiment for future video coding beyond VVC. This year marks 160 years of the International Telecommunication Union 📻📺🛰️. Jakub Nikonowicz, known for his long-lasting cooperation with Mid Sweden University, further emphasized his links with the Baltic Sea region by sharing his expertise on Polsat News regarding the concerning damage to the underwater cable connecting Sweden and Latvia 🎤.

Last week, on 17 January, before the ongoing MPEG meeting, ITU and ISO/IEC conducted the JTC 1 SC 29 Joint Workshop on “Future video coding—advanced signal processing, AI and standards.” The invited speakers, representing, among others, Samsung, Amazon, Huawei, and Qualcomm, gave us an excellent insight into the future of video compression standards from an industry perspective. The event was attended on-site in Geneva's ITU headquarters by Damian Karwowski (carefully listening to the speakers in the photo below) and Dawid Mieloch. We are happy to announce that our employee, Adam Grzelka, has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation and been awarded the PhD with distinction 👨🎓. This is a significant milestone in his academic career, and we are incredibly proud of his accomplishment. The reviewers commended not only his impressive knowledge and research abilities but also the broad scope of his research and its groundbreaking nature. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement also go to the supervisors: prof. Marek Domański, and prof. Olgierd Stankiewicz!  👏

Yesterday, our employee Olgierd Stankiewicz was promoted to a new position as Associate Professor by the decision of the Rector and Senate of Poznan University of Technology. In particular, the Senate appreciated his contribution to the international cooperation of our university and his continuous contact with industry. Congratulations on this excellent achievement! 🌟

Today, our friends from SoftServe - Łukasz Januszkiewicz and Jakub Wasilewski, presented us "AI-based spatial audio rendering for VR applications using GPU" during our Multimedia Telecommunications seminar. Besides sharing their recent discoveries in the field, they provided us with a unique opportunity to hear their immersive audio rendering method live using a Unity-based demo on Oculus VR goggles! 🎧 Thank you! 🙇♂️ Our seminars are open to all students, and we encourage them to explore new technologies in the multimedia field.
