Lessons from a CEO: How We Survived the Crisis by Going 'All-in with AI' 🤖 I know the current crisis has been rough for most of us 😔. It's been a challenging time for us at Stepwise too. Not long ago, we were building web and mobile solutions for companies worldwide, even landing the Fast50 award from Deloitte – a real highlight 🌟 for our company. As a co-founder and CEO, I was proud that we managed to achieve such a level of growth 📈 in just 3-4 years of running the business. As a manager, when you experience growth, you assume it will last forever. But not this time ⌛. As the economy took a downturn in 2022/2023, we hit a rough patch. Our once-thriving project stream began to diminish, and we found ourselves making some of the toughest decisions to date. We downsized from 40 dedicated team members to a core group of 10. It was a period of uncertainty and difficult choices 💔. We barely survived but learned tough lessons, and at the same time, we were observing opportunities around us. In the midst of these challenges, we spotted a silver lining – the rise of AI 🤖 and tools like ChatGPT. This wasn't just a trend; it was our call to PIVOT 🔄 and fully immerse ourselves in AI and Machine Learning. We set out to attract the best talent in the field, from Data Engineers to AI Solutions Architects and Prompt Engineers. We decided to build on our strengths, as my other two co-founders, Rafal (CTO) and Radek (CIO), are great in backend development and cloud engineering ☁️. The transformation wasn't instant, but our commitment bore fruit 🍏. Within a year, we grew from a team of 10 to 25, securing new clients and projects in the process. We did a 180-degree turn from a web and mobile software house to an AI and Machine Learning development company that has a 100% focus on this new wave 🌊. And as timing is crucial in business, we are happy to be one of the first companies to use this window of opportunity. This journey showed us the power of adaptability and the importance of embracing change, especially in times of adversity. It's about uniting as a team 👫👬👭, focusing on our collective strengths, and seizing new opportunities with determination. My lessons from this situation: Rapid growth is given, but can be taken away at any moment, so be cautious and observe the market 🔍. Always have a plan B 🔄. Be flexible to adapt in tough times, building on your strengths 💪.
