We need to look at more than just cost. Also what about value to the customer? What if this new sustainable material will increase sales and make for more loyal customers? Also note EPR may be a cost if you choose the wrong material. ❤️🌎

This is probably the most frequent question I get. Coming from CPG design agency career, as I started my sustainable journey, my instinct was to pitch a material change first-- because this is what I understood most. What I found was a lot of resistance and a whole lot of closed doors. Why? Because I didn't understand more of the value chain-- or the overall system, and how that contributed to the conversation. It's not to say a material change isn't the first step, but be sure that you are pitching this change inside a greater context of understanding - whether a sustainability strategy, supply chain strategy or other relevant thinking. More proof points; more empathy; powerful change. Also, this doesn't ALWAYS mean more expensive.

As sustainability advocates, our goal is to guide them through potential solutions that achieve the same results with sustainable materials. By considering the full lifespan of both the building and materials, we can demonstrate that sustainable options often prove more cost-efficient over time. Calculating ROI and highlighting financial benefits like lower energy costs and reduced maintenance can make the case clear. Beyond economics, we should also emphasize the environmental and social advantages, helping clients see the broader value of choosing sustainable materials.
