Today, I presented "Aptoide - Digital Regulation from a Business Perspective" at the "Wettbewerb, Fairness und Wandel" (Competition, Fairness, and Change) event in Vienna, Austria, organized by the Austrian Federal Competition Authority, Vienna University of Economics and Business, and WIFO. In my presentation, I provided an overview of the challenges that Aptoide has faced in the app store market over the years, with a particular focus on recent developments after the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Key obstacles include artificial friction in installing alternative stores on both Android and iOS devices and self-preferential practices in search and advertising, which favor native app stores. For instance, Apple’s policy imposes a "core technology fee" on alternative stores, creating significant financial burdens regardless of revenue. Similarly, Android, while offering an external offers program, provides minimal fee reductions to developers. High fees and complex terms discourage developers, while restrictive online advertising practices block user acquisition efforts for non-incumbent app distribution platforms, perpetuating dependence on the dominant gatekeepers. The DMA, along with initiatives from local competition authorities and courts, is sending positive signals for change. However, there is still considerable work to be done before users and developers experience the full benefits of these regulatory measures. It was a pleasure to exchange ideas and meet with Viktoria (Vicky) Robertson, Lukas Cavada, and other thoughtful participants at the event.
