It is winter with dark skies and drizzles over Reguengos, so time to prune our 2-year old Antão Vaz vines. We have chosen single cordon trained method and expect our first small harvest this year.

The Cost of Herbicides (or not) in the Vineyard I often speak with colleagues about why they use herbicides when mechanical weeding in the vineyard is perfectly feasible today. The reason is invariably that it's cheaper, and you don't get a cent extra for your grapes to cover the extra cost. This is not absolutely correct, you can get a maybe 10 cents extra per kilo for bio/eco/organic grapes, but this involves a much bigger investment than stopping the use of herbicides, and the few cents extra for your grapes does not cover the extra cost and risk growers have. At Baena Mourão we don't use herbicides, and as you can see in the picture this years cover crop failed miserably in part of our vineyard (but the weeds are cut not sprayed) and we don't give up easy. As farmers we put what we have in making a better world. What about you?

It takes only one heavy downpour to wash away soil in a two-year old vineyard. Just take a look at the natural waterway - even in a pretty flat piece of land! We have to sow the cover crops again in this part of the vineyard as soon as possible. In return, our two-year old cover crops are doing the trick in the old part of the vineyard - nice and green in December already with good root systems.

In the nose elegant with deep notes of black cherry, in the mouth light and fresh but intense, beautiful dark red crystal color (no fining), and a beautiful finish that stays with you. The family scruffy winemaker has done it again! This time at Madklubben, Østerbro in Copenhagen, where we first presented our Antão Vaz Talha wine for invited importers and retailers, including a quick tasting. It was followed by wine tasting (and lots of talk) of more of our wines paired with small delicate dishes, to show how our wines fit with different meals - or no meals, for that matter, if you just want to enjoy a fresh Antão Vaz Premium before a meal 😋
