📢 Communication 🎤 Last Tuesday, Rafaela Presa took part in a roundtable discussion at i3S titled "The beauty and the beast". This session focused on the crucial role of #hyaluronicacid across several fields, from #tissueengineering and #invitromodels to #cancer research and #aesthetics. Rafaela is currently using hyaluronic acid to create a 3D in vitro model of skin fibrosis. Her insights underlined the potential of the polymer, emphasizing the importance of the molecular weight and how blending it with other polymers can improve the material's properties. Well done, Rafaela 👏
This week, I had the opportunity to participate in the #BioEngineeringHub event dedicated to exploring the hyaluronic acid (HA) molecule, its powerful properties, and its diverse applications—from tissue engineering to aesthetic medicine. I have been dedicating part of my PhD research to the chemical functionalization of HA to enhance and tune its mechanical properties for subsequent incorporation into an in vitro model of human skin fibrosis. Then, providing more relevant biological, biochemical, and biophysical cues to the cells, we can achieve more reliable cellular responses, enhancing our understanding of disease initiation and progression. Thank you to the organizing committee for the invitation and opportunity to share part of my work and learn from experts in the field. #i3s #biofabrication #term
