🌟RESIST Spotlight Series: Baixo Alentejo Baixo Alentejo is bursting with cultural heritage, reflected in its archaeological sites, castles🏰, churches⛪, old mines, museums and its small towns and villages. This region is facing climate risks triggered by increased extreme events like heat waves🌡️, forest fires🔥 and droughts🌾, challenges it shares with its twinned regions #Catalonia and #Puglia. The RESIST Project is focusing on re-skilling the regional workforce when it comes to #climateadaptation. The region will also support adaptation actions in rural villages by finding transformative solutions, particularly in the sectors of water management, forest management and energy. 🏆 Now that #Spain has officially been crowned the champions of UEFA EURO 2024, what better way to continue our 🌟 Spotlight Series than with a Spanish region: #Extremadura. Did you know that Extremadura, which is located in southwest Spain, stores a quarter of Spain's freshwater 💧 and generates nearly a quarter of its solar power ☀️. Furthermore, around 70% of the region’s territory is designated for #forest use🌳 while 30% is made up of nature reserves and protected areas. Like much of Spain, Extremadura faces a number of environmental and socioeconomic challenges that are being exacerbated by the impacts of #climatechange. Many of these challenges are linked: population decline leads to landscape degradation, which in turns heightens the risk of wildfires. In collaboration with its twin region of #CentralPortugal, Extremadura is pioneering an adaptive approach in its search for solutions. The Spanish region aims to create fire-smart 🔥communities by restoring traditional mosaic landscapes with integrated productive firebreaks.
