🚀 We are happy to announce that, starting from January 2025, the SIMIACCI project will be a reality! This groundbreaking Research and Innovation project funded under the Horizon Europe programme will be coordinated by CERENA-Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente and CEGIST | Centre for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico, and will see the collaboration of several European Research Centers and Cultural Heritage Institutions. 🌱 The climate transition impacts all sectors of the EU economy, including cultural and creative industries. In particular, Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAMs) need to meet high standards for indoor air quality to better conserve cultural heritage artifacts. Traditional solutions are often energy intensive, but SIMIACCI's goal is to support GLAMs' transition towards climate-friendlier practices. 🏛️ Through innovative solutions integrated in current infrastructure, like Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and predictive modelling, we aim to reduce energy demand by 30-50% while extending the conservation time of cultural heritage artifacts. Our portfolio includes smart solutions for diverse pollutants (VOCs, NOx, H2S) mitigation, alongside modular designs and new business models. 🌍 Moisés Pinto, Abeer Mohtar and Leonardo Azevedo from CERENA-Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente will work to develop a predictive tool to optimize adsorbent use in air purifiers, minimizing energy and resources consumption. By combining chemical calculations and empirical data on indoor air pollutants acquired in the institutions involved in the project, SIMIACCI will not only enhance indoor air quality management in GLAMs but also inspire climate transition in 5 additional sectors. Join us as we will demonstrate these advancements across Europe and beyond, with dedicated exhibitions reaching 30,000 visitors within 7 GLAMs! More info and updates on the future of cultural heritage preservation coming soon... 🌿 #HorizonEurope #ResearchInnovation #ClimateTransition #GLAMs #Sustainability #IndoorAirQuality #CulturalHeritage

📣 The EU-funded project MINOTAUR Mining has officially started! 🤝 The project, coordinated by Luleå tekniska universitet, will see the collaboration of DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Politechnika Warszawska, University of Patras, IMA-Europe (Industrial Minerals Association - Europe), GEK TERNA Group of Companies, and COMMUNITY FORGED INNOVATION IKE (CFI). 🤖 At CERENA-Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente, João Narciso, Amélia Dionísio, Gustavo P. and Leonardo Azevedo will contribute to the overall objectives of the project by developing real-time methods for modeling georesources, creating digital models of well cores and economic forecasting for mining. It will use data from sensors to improve resource and safety models, supporting better exploration and mining decisions. #ResourceCharacterization #MineralExploration #DigitalTwins #MiningInnovation #SustainableMining #SmartMining #MiningTech #MiningResearch #HorizonEurope
🌍 Kicking Off the EU-Funded Minotaur Project ⛏️ 🗣 We’re excited to announce the successful launch of the EU-funded Minotaur Project, focused on fostering innovation in the mining sector. The project’s kick-off meeting took place on 14–15 November 2024 in Brussels, hosted by the IMA-Europe (Industrial Minerals Association - Europe), one of the project's partners 🤝 🚀 The Minotaur Project aims to develop innovative exploration technology for deep land deposits. It is reasonable to assume that low cost deposits have been exploited in the early stage of each project in order to minimise technical and financial risks. Technology helps to mitigate such higher costs and risks with more efficient equipment and energy usage, higher recovery techniques and better resources utilisation to create at the same time a safer place for work and minimise environmental impact. 📈 The meeting brought together an impressive consortium of stakeholders from across Europe, including industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers, to outline the project's roadmap and set priorities for the coming months ✅ 🤝 We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable input and engagement. With such a diverse pool of expertise, we are optimistic about the project's potential to drive meaningful advancements in mining practices across Europe 👏 🤝 A special thanks to Ewelina Rathje and Ramona Pricop from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) for joining us and sharing their invaluable guidelines and experience. Their insights were instrumental in setting the tone for a collaborative and impactful project. 📢 Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this exciting journey toward a more environmentally-aware and innovative future in mining! #MinotaurMining #Innovation #Sustainability #Mining #MinotaurProject #EUProject #EuropeanCommission

Earlier this week, the first edition of the Técnico Innovation Summit took place at the Técnico Innovation Center as part of the 10th edition of the PhD Open Days. In this opportunity, four impactful projects funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (Recuperar Portugal) featuring CERENA’s contributions were showcased: 🌱 Within the VIIAFOOD Agenda framework, our researchers are developing biodegradable polymers for food oil and olive oil packaging, using sustainable raw materials of natural origin. This initiative is part of the broader effort to transform the agri-food sector in Portugal. 🔍 The Sustainable Stone by Portugal Agenda aims to reduce CO2 emissions and quarry waste by combining AI and drone imaging to create virtual 3D models of natural stone blocks in the early stages of industrial processing. In strict collaboration with ornamental stone industries and associations, Instituto Politécnico de Santarém and IDMEC, the team is developing deep learning algorithms that are key to optimizing raw material use. ✈ In support of the energy transition in transportation, the Moving2Neutrality Agenda focuses on developing sustainable fuels to achieve carbon neutrality. CERENA hosts two research groups: one working on green ammonia production at an industrial scale, and the other on developing green fuels for air and maritime transport from alternative, non-fossil raw materials. Collaboration with Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE) strengthens the impact of this project. 🔋 Aiming to meet the EU’s energy transition goals and fully electric mobility by 2040 and 2035, respectively, the New Generation Storage Innovation Pact project is focused on building a full battery value chain, from recycling used batteries to reusing materials like Lithium for second-life applications. CERENA researchers are exploring leaching and extraction processes to recover valuable materials for sustainable battery production. Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE) and LNEG are key partners in this initiative. Our scientific community had the honor of presenting some of the results of cutting-edge publicly funded research to a visiting group of ministers and the Prime Minister of Portugal. When science gets the funding it deserves, the future looks brighter and greener for everyone! 🌍✨ #InnovationSummit #Sustainability #AgriFood #EnergyTransition #GreenTechnology #Innovation #CERENA #PRR #AI #GreenFuels #BatteryRecycling dimpomar - Natural Stone from Portugal and Around the World Granoguli ASSIMAGRA Associação Cluster Portugal Mineral Resources StoneCITI
