On February 28, we mark Rare Disease Day 🧬, raising awareness of the 300 million people affected by these diseases worldwide 🌍. At CNC-UC, we are committed to advancing research into Machado-Joseph disease, Fatal Familial Insomnia and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy 🧠, working to develop innovative therapies that can change lives 💡. From March 11 to 17, we're taking part in Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to promote enthusiasm, knowledge and research in neuroscience 🧬🔬. Throughout the month, we'll be running activities for all ages! 📌 Here are some activities you can look forward to! 👩🏫 Neuroscientists in Schools 🏫- Lectures, debates, visits and hands-on activities 🧩, from pre-school to senior universities, throughout the month of March. Brain Gain 🎓- An initiative aimed at secondary school and university students 🎒, inspiring future careers in neuroscience. It will take place on March 18 and 25, from 6pm to 8pm (online). 🌙 World Sleep Day 😴 - Awareness-raising activities on the importance of sleep for mental health and well-being, on March 14, in various locations. Researchers from CNC-UC have made an important breakthrough by identifying the microRNA miR-186-5p as a therapeutic target to combat the effects of chronic stress on the brain. In collaboration with national and international experts, the team demonstrated that by inhibiting the increase in miR-186-5p, it is possible to restore synaptic function and rebalance neuronal networks affected by prolonged stress. This intervention can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, opening up new possibilities for the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases associated with stress. In a global context of growing concern about chronic stress, this study offers hope for the development of more effective therapies against various mental health conditions. The project is supported by the La Caixa Foundation and the Foundation for Science and Technology.
