𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? Some conferences are inspiring, others are just insightful, and some are great fun. Some also give you the chance to reconnect with colleagues you admire who’ve become friends. The 2024 CommOCEAN was all of that—and more. Within an excellent selection of talks on marine science communication, I had the privilege of working with Laura, Andrea, Jack, and Ángel to create a special session exploring what makes an impactful presentation. The result was a mix of workshop and theatre that exceeded our expectations. Laura began with a deliberately terrible presentation—packed with every design and public-speaking mistake we could think of. Her performance was brilliant. The audience was uncomfortably in pain. I quietly laughed to myself. Then came the transformation: Laura returned to deliver the same content with stunning visuals (brilliantly created by Sofia) and an energetic, engaging style. The contrast was extraordinary, and the room lit up. What followed was a lively discussion, moderated by yours truly. We had prepared questions to steer the conversation, but there was no need—more hands went up than I’ve seen at some concerts! Colleagues from across Europe eagerly shared ideas, posed questions, and debated the elements of an effective presentation. The energy was electric. We could have carried on all afternoon, but time ran out. This session showcased the power of teamwork, creativity, and a willingness to think outside the box. It reminded me of the importance of good vibes, questioning conventions, and shared enthusiasm. I couldn’t be prouder to have been part of such a collaborative effort.
