The Biotech and Pharma sector plays a crucial role in global health—but it’s also a significant contributor to climate change, with the industry’s carbon impact growing from 3.9% in 2021 to 5% in 2022. As a result, the sector must be an integral part of the climate solution. 📈 Progress is happening: - 53% of the sector by revenue (35 companies) have joined the Race to Zero initiative in 2023, a jump from 46% on 2022. - 63% of Pharma and MedTech companies in the initiative have launched My Green Lab Certification programs, nearly half of which are on a global scale. 💡 The My Green Lab Certification helps labs become sustainable by focusing on reducing emissions and driving eco-friendly purchasing practices—even within supply chains. This program supports the global goal of achieving a zero-carbon world by 2050. 🚀 “Converge” is a groundbreaking initiative uniting major pharma companies to inspire action across their supply chains. Companies with 10+ labs enrolled in My Green Lab Certification collectively request their suppliers to certify their labs. 👩🔬👨🔬 In November 2023, AstraZeneca, GSK, Amgen, and Bristol Myers Squibb joined Converge, setting a strong precedent for collaboration across the sector. 🌱 Embrace sustainability at the 11th i3S Annual Meeting! 🌱 Let’s make the 11th i3S Annual Meeting as eco-friendly as possible! This is not just a meeting of minds but a chance to consciously choose practices that reduce our environmental impact and encourage others to do the same. Here are a few ways we can make a difference, both individually and as a community: 1. Bring Your Own Reusable Water Bottle or Mug 🥤 2. Opt for Digital Programs & Notes 💻: Access schedules on your phone, laptop, or tablet, and try digital note-taking apps to save paper. 3. Mindful of Flyers and Handouts 📄: It’s common to receive promotional materials at events, but let’s only accept those that are truly useful. By politely declining unnecessary handouts, we can reduce waste. 4. Public Transport and Carpooling 🚉🚗: If you’re traveling to the meeting, consider eco-friendly options. Public transport or carpooling not only reduce your carbon footprint but also provide a chance to connect with fellow attendees on your way there. 5. Recycling Stations ♻️: Be aware of recycling bins around the venue and use them for any waste, ensuring we all help to reduce landfill impact. Encourage others to sort their waste too! By taking even a few of these simple steps, each of us can contribute to a meeting that’s more respectful of the planet. Together, we can make this meeting a model of eco-consciousness and lead the way in promoting a sustainable future. 🌍💚
