The second edition of MASS TALKS brought together Nuno Sampaio (Director of Casa da Arquitectura) and Ana Neiva (Researcher, Curator, and Teacher) at MASSLAB Porto, where they shared their perspectives on today's challenges and ways to shape the future. Created to question and explore ideas on how to build the future, MASS TALKS – HOW TO BUILD THE FUTURE? is a series of conversations hosted by MASSLAB, where two invited multidisciplinary experts share their visions for the future, offering different and complementary perspectives. The open dialogue bridges architecture, culture, education, and innovation as drivers of change. Following the success of the first two editions of the MASS TALKS, it's our purpose to continue these informal conversations and offer a space to question, reflect, and explore new ways to think, design, and build the future. A big thank you to Nuno and Ana for accepting our challenge. Thank you to BOAVISTA WINDOWS and everyone who joined the conversation. We look forward to welcoming you to the upcoming editions! Together, we are designing for a hopeful future 🌎

How do we build the future? How do we educate for architectural practice? And how do we inform the general public about the impact of the built environment and the architects' role in it? - These were some of the key questions driving the 2nd edition of "MASS Talks - How to Build the Future?", which took place on January 31st at the MASSLAB Porto office. Nuno Sampaio, director of Casa da Arquitectura, and Ana Neiva, researcher, curator and teacher, brought different but complementary visions to the discussion. We explored the challenges of architectural production - from material capacity to the research that shapes and transforms the discipline. We also discussed the role of curation and education in training future architects and how they can respond to today's multiple crises - climate, regulations, and the construction industry. As Nuno Sampaio challenged us by quoting Paulo Mendes da Rocha "What is the purpose of architecture? Architecture exists to prevent disaster" - a reminder that architecture is not just about building but about rethinking, adapting, and sometimes, stopping. Ana Neiva reminded us that the idea of "we need to consume less, we need to stop building" is a bold provocation but only valid in certain contexts and countries, in a time when construction is both a necessity and a crisis driver. Architecture is more than a formal exercise; it must be an active tool to mitigate and solve contemporary challenges. The world is changing, and we must ask ourselves: as architects, what is our role in the future? A big thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday, and to Boavista Windows for partnering with us. The MASS Talks will continue, bringing new perspectives and interdisciplinary dialogues on architecture and the world around us. If you want to be part of this conversation, stay tuned for the next editions!

  • Is the secret to a team's success the "absence" of hierarchy? Marta Pereira, our Head of People, explores this question in her latest article published at Líder - Ideias que fazem futuro, discussing how horizontal organizational structures are becoming an appealing alternative to traditional hierarchies. By fostering innovation, flexibility, and collaboration, this approach is redefining teamwork and creativity - values at the core of MASSLAB's organizational model. Banishing Sustainability: a pledge for 2025 At MASSLAB, we are embracing a bold commitment: in 2025, we will go beyond the overused term "sustainability" and remove it from our communication and storytelling altogether. Why? Because the word has been diluted, often used to cloak inadequate measures that perpetuate the status quo. True progress demands more than lip service—it requires genuine transformation in how we design, build, and impact the planet and its people. This journey won’t be easy. We anticipate challenges, missteps, and even contradictions as we align our actions with our ambitions. However, we are steadfast in this iterative process of improvement—driven by learning, collaboration, and a refusal to settle for complacency. We’re not just designing buildings; we want to design a paradigm shift—from ego-centric to eco-centric, from grey to green. #DesigningForAHopefulFuture #BeyondSustainability MASSLAB Catarina Calçada Gaspar
