Does your English improvement depend on structured courses?
How can you generate real impact?
Last week I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Catherine McDonald and the “70:20:10” model of learning came up.
So, I decided to dig deeper and get a better understanding of the model.
Essentially, it is about switching priorities.
From formal learning to integrating learning in the workflow.
The 70:20:10 method is all about learning by doing. Here's the breakdown:
𝟕𝟎%: Hands-on Experience: Dive into real-world situations where English is used daily. Use opportunities like client calls, meetings, and presentations to improve your skills.
𝟐𝟎%: Social Learning: Engage with peers, mentors, and language partners to exchange ideas, receive feedback, and learn from each other's experiences.
𝟏𝟎%: Formal Learning: Supplement your hands-on experience with structured learning materials like online courses, textbooks, or workshops to fill in any gaps and reinforce your understanding.
This has a strong impact on how we approach learning.
In one sentence?
Put yourself out there.
Start applying the H.A.C.K. strategy today
🅗 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞: refine your skills by practicing daily (at work, with friends or by interacting through voice messages)
🅐 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Presentations, meetings, calls… every interaction is a chance to learn and grow.
🅒 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Create a strong network with your peers, exchange ideas and feedback.
🅚 𝐊𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐬: Recognize and celebrate milestones along the way to boost morale and motivate continued growth.
This is a direct consequence of the 70:20:10 model and it gives an effective plan on how we can improve.
It’s continuous learning in action.
P.S. Have you got any “life hacks” to add to this strategy? Let me know.

I was recently rereading "Creating Significant Learning Experiences" by Dee Fink and recalled that his idea of significant learning demands that there be change within the learner, and that the change be "some kind of lasting change within the learner's life." I think this is a compelling idea, and I also think it is further evidence toward my critique of "measurable learning outcomes." Change within a person may be observable or measurable to another person, but it also may not be.
People often think, behave, and communicate differently from one another. My work on neurodiversity leads me to encourage people in education to work towards greater mutual respect and understanding of different thinking, communication, and behavioral styles, but I also always caveat that there is nothing inherently wrong when someone doesn't automatically grasp or understand another person's thought process. There is a view of assessment that is it the job of the student to make their learning and thought process legible and comprehensible to the instructor, which I have always found troubling, especially as a student. I am definitely in favor of assessment methods that focus on this "lasting change within the learner's life" rather than purely the legibility of the student's learning to the instructor.
Added: these were my previous thought on backward design/measurable learning outcomes https://lnkd.in/e95PUAvW
One of our Duolingo operating principles is “test it first.”
I love the sheer scale of our testing; we run hundreds of simultaneous A/B tests to find new ways to teach more effectively. We have tens of millions of learners (just under 30M daily active users last quarter) and we use innovative thinking and experimentation to improve how we teach.
Whenever we make a change to the Duolingo app, small or big, we first test to make sure it doesn’t have a negative impact on our users or their ability to learn. We do the same for the course content, never making any change until it has been tested and shown to have positive effects on our learners’ progress.
But today, I want to talk about a class of experiments that surprised me.
A few years ago, we started a team called ✨ Delight ✨. Delight was not tasked with improving our metrics; its purpose was to make the app more delightful. This can be anything from:
💥Animating the explosions that appear when you answer a hard question.
🐝Satisfying haptic feedback throughout your lesson
✨Adding subtle sparkles across the app
We didn’t expect these changes to have a positive effect on our numbers. But we tested them anyway. To our surprise, the animations do in fact keep people in the app longer and cause them to return to the app more often! ✨Delight facilitates learning✨, in ways we did not anticipate.
Though we discovered that these animations *did* hurt the performance of one user segment: those who use Duolingo on lower-end devices. So we are able to turn off the more processing-intensive animations for these users to make sure their educational experience is not harmed 🥳
Another thing I love about our experiment-driven culture is how it facilitates collaboration. When a cross-functional team (made up of product, engineering, design and others) has to move a metric, they brainstorm together ➡️ come up with multiple ideas and hypotheses ➡️ test them to see what moves the needle ➡️ and iterate 🔁
If you are an engineer who wants to contribute meaningfully to education, with a strong sense of how products can be continuously improved, you’re one of us. Check out our open engineering roles here at Duolingo! https://lnkd.in/e9c8yXRz#duolingo#education#engineering#abtesting#hiring

The power of an open mind is immeasurable, especially when it comes to embracing lifelong learning. In today's fast-paced world, those who are open to learning are better equipped to navigate the twists and turns that come their way.
✔ By cultivating an open mind, individuals can embrace change rather than fear it, seeing each new challenge as an opportunity for growth and development.
✔ An open mind invites diversity and encourages exploration beyond one's comfort zone. Through exposure to new ideas, cultures, and ways of thinking, lifelong learners gain a broader perspective on the world around them.
✔ Creativity thrives in an environment where new ideas are welcomed, and experimentation is encouraged.
✔ At its core, lifelong learning is about personal growth and fulfillment. An open mind allows individuals to challenge their own beliefs and assumptions, leading to personal development and self-discovery.
✔ Curiosity is the driving force behind lifelong learning, and an open mind is its ally.

Some of Finland's trains feature dedicated entertainment sections for children. They are learning environments where kids can engage in educational activities, play, and unleash their creativity while crossing the stunning Finnish landscapes.
This initiative does more than entertain. It turns travel time into a productive, enjoyable learning experience, helping parents and making the journey relaxing and fun for the little ones. It reflects a broader commitment to educational innovation and public transport's role in societal well-being.
Could this model be replicated in other parts of the world? How do you see creative spaces influencing public transport in your region?

Vale a leitura !
