Athenic AI: Revolutionizing Data Analytics with Generative AI

Jared Zhao’s journey into data analytics began during his time at UC Berkeley, where he became fascinated by the idea of transforming raw data into compelling stories. In 2021, Zhao founded his first data analytics startup, Polyture. However, the rapid advancements in generative AI, particularly with the rise of tools like ChatGPT, made him realize Polyture’s approach was too complex for what users would need in this new AI-driven landscape. It was time to pivot.

The result? Athenic AI, a cutting-edge platform designed to simplify how enterprises utilize data analytics. As founder and CEO, Zhao envisions Athenic as the “central nervous system” for an organization’s databases—accessible to anyone, regardless of technical expertise.

What makes Athenic unique is its flexibility. The platform is built to understand a company’s specific needs, such as internal terminology, KPIs, or even “tribal knowledge,” giving the AI the necessary context to deliver more accurate and actionable insights.

How Athenic AI Works

Each data report produced by Athenic includes a detailed explanation of how the AI interpreted the data, making it easier for users to identify potential errors and provide feedback. This transparency helps ensure accountability and accuracy. Zhao emphasized that while no system—AI or human—is perfect, Athenic’s approach mirrors the best practices of skilled data analysts.

“Even when the system is wrong, it’s aware it might be wrong, and it explains why,” Zhao explained. “A good data analyst doesn’t just give you a chart—they provide an executive summary that explains the context and methods behind their analysis.”

Since launching in summer 2022, Athenic has attracted a diverse range of customers, from small startups to large enterprises like Additel and PMC. While many smaller clients have been acquired through outbound sales efforts, enterprise clients largely came through inbound interest—highlighting the growing demand for Athenic’s solutions.

Growth and Funding

San Francisco-based Athenic AI recently announced a $4.3 million seed round, led by BMW i Ventures with participation from TenVC, Scrum Ventures, and Stage 2 Capital, among others. Zhao says the funding will be used to expand the team and develop new technological capabilities.

Currently, the platform is designed for users to ask questions and extract insights. But Zhao envisions a future where the system proactively identifies and suggests insights based on the data before users even ask.

What Sets Athenic Apart?

Samantha Huang, principal at BMW i Ventures, noted that Athenic stood out because it combines foundational AI models with custom knowledge graphs to adapt to a company’s unique context.

“A lot of companies use generic, pre-trained AI models, but without understanding the customer’s specific data environment, those models can be pretty limited,” she explained. “Jared took a new approach, bridging that gap with a more tailored solution.”

The Road Ahead for Data Analytics

The data analytics space is increasingly competitive, with giants like Databricks raising over $19 billion in venture capital and being valued at $62 billion. Many companies focused on data storage and optimization are also exploring ways to expand into AI-powered analytics. However, Zhao believes Athenic’s emphasis on user experience and company-specific context gives it a competitive edge.

“There’s too much data being underutilized, even though it’s all technically there,” Zhao said. “Many businesses are flying blind—not because they lack information, but because they don’t have the tools to interpret it effectively. That’s the problem we want to solve.”

With generative AI continuing to evolve, Athenic AI is well-positioned to help organizations harness their data and turn it into meaningful insights that drive better decision-making.
