I took St. John's Wort against my medical doctor's advice. He wanted to put me on an antidepressant due to anxiety and depression. Within a short time of taking SJW I started to feel better. My depression and anxiety were non-existent but he didn't feel it was...

I used tinctures in juice, per label instructions. I tried two 1 oz bottles of this and I didn't see any noticeable difference in my depression. Went on prozac and I did see a difference. I've since gone off prozac and have found that outdoor exercise, lots of fruits and...

Started taking Nature's Answer SJW 6 months ago to deal with depression post stroke. I started with just a few drops; am now taking 10 drops every morning (330 mg) and it's been great. I feel like my old self again; I'm motivated and found joy again in living (previously suicidal). It's also helped with dealing with pain /spasticity and sleep; and also energy levels. Only side effects is appetite suppressed, some blurry vision and photosensitivity (prickly skin rash in the sun). Concerned about vision... issue as can cause ocular toxicity. Read More Read Less

I've tried SJW as an organic treatment for my mild seasonal depression. It didn't improve the mood, didn't affect the sleep, did nothing at all for my depression or ADHD. +PROS: SJW stopped my hair loss completely, surprisingly. I've been taking lots of vitamins and vitamin combinations to treat my hair loss and nothing actually worked as I wanted it to. SJW did miracles to my hair in a week or less; my hair loss has just vanished as if it has never existed at all! I would find a hair or two when... brushing in the morning and up to five hairs when washing my hair. A week or two after I stopped taking SJW, the hair loss was back again. -CONS (warning for women): SJW elongated my period cycle to 35-38 days instead of my usual 26-day cycle and skyrocketed my prolactin level.Three months after I stopped taking SJW, the cycle is still at 35 days, the prolactin is 48 when normal should be between 9 and 23. A MAJOR SIDE EFFECT: heart palpations I was on St. John's Wort for 5 years and it helped in the beginning but then I started to have severe heart palpations. My doctor did everything and they couldn't figure out why my heart was having issues. They knew it was not a mechanical issue. Then we started going through my vitamins and when I told them I was on St. John's Wort they told me that it was a side effect. And unfortunately for me, this caused me to have a heart problem for years. It took a long... time to get out of my system and had to go on medications to lower my heart rate. Always feeling like your heart is racing didn't do well for any anxiety or depression. Read More Read Less

St John’s Wort is typically more effective for Depression than Anxiety. Much like Fluoxetine. Everyone is going to react differently. For me St John’s Wort helped with Depression fairy well. Increased energy, I felt truly happy and helped me focus and sleep. On the other hand made anxiety, anger and restlessness worse. Withdrawal is probably much like Zoloft. I experienced spikes in anxiety randomly for a few days, feeling generally sick and feeling angry all the time for about 3 months after tapering.... I took 900 mg and then 1200 mg for a little over a year. Year 2 from stopping medicine, about the same time of the year when I stopped it originally, I feel the constant anger again. Very annoying. Will not take again due to withdrawal. May be very effective for some but be careful that it could cause moderate to severe withdrawal that last months and reoccurs. Read More Read Less

Do not stop taking this. actually, do not even begin to take it. It is not meant to be taken for the long term. Side effects of withdrawal are awful --- I experienced heart palpitations. There should be a warning label on this bottle.

I went on St. Johns wort for about three months and it did relieve depression within about two weeks. However, it caused very high blood pressure and high TSH levels indicating hypothyroidism.

Have been taking SJW for over a month. I’ve experienced periods of sleeplessness, insomnia, anxiety and depression for over two years. Comes and goes in waves and appears to be triggered by stress either personally or professionally in the workplace. Do your research. For me this herb is working, my overall mood has improved and I’m sleeping better, feeling less anxious etc. I’m glad I gave it a go. Good luck!

My depression is different, I overthink things, it's like my brain NEVER turns off. So I started taking SJW years ago to help me relax and sleep. I take it one hour before I go to bed and I fall asleep in no time and stay asleep. When I wake up I feel rested and clear headed.

I have severe depression, fatigue, and pretty moderate anxiety. I have been on Sertraline (aka Zoloft), Fluvoxamine (aka Luvox or Fevarin), and Mirtazapine (aka Remeron) and have had to stop them for various reasons. I had pretty much given up on feeling better after the latest antidepressant didn't work, but decided to go and buy myself some C, D3, B-complex vitamins as well as St. John's Wort (333mg). I've been taking this combination for about two weeks, and the changes have already been very... noticeable. I'm not feeling fantastic, but at least I'm not constantly down or thinking very negatively. I'm also less tired, but that often comes with feeling less depressed. Read More Read Less

I have seasonal affective disorder, and its HORRIBLE. I'm talking straight up can't get out of bed depression. I treated it with light therapy, which made me functional but I can't say I felt as great as I did in the summer. This year I decided to try St. John's Wort since I am off all other medication and no longer need birth control (since it does interact with most meds). It was 100% a miracle drug. I have a winter of cheerfulness. If I skipped taking it even for a day though, my mood went... down and my family was making sure I took my dose. I would recommend anyone to try this inexpensive, natural, no side effect drug if they are not taking any other meds. Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with anxiety and mild depressive episodes 2 months ago. My symptoms are breathlessness and poor sleep. I've been taking SJW 900mg a day for 2 months. I'd say I'm 50% better. Thinking I maybe need something a bit stronger. If anyone has had a similar experience I'd be grateful to hear about it.

I started taking it 3 weeks ago for low mood and mild anxiety. It lifted my mood very slightly but my anxiety increased. It felt like nicotine withdrawal. I only ever had withdrawal symptoms for 3 days after giving up smoking but this has gradually increased over 3 weeks. Palpitations and rapid breathing. Awful. I stopped taking it yesterday morning and feel noticably better now.

Been using this herb off and on for several years. It chills me out. I just use a low daily dose of 300mg once daily. More would be too much for me. Every time I stop taking this herb, within a couple of weeks, my anxiety comes back. It definitely works.

I needed something to help with my depression spiraling into rather dark places. I wasn't looking for something to make me "happy" but just keep me from going into "that" place. Preferring natural choices if available, I decided to give St John's Wort a try. I did some research on good brands, and started at the lowest dose. Within a few days it was working - and doing exactly what I needed. I was having a bad morning, heading down that path, and just as I was ready to sink into the dark place it's... like a virtual wall was literally thrown up in my mind's path. I experienced this several times over the following week. After a couple weeks there was a slight overall mood shift. This isn't the only thing I'm doing to help, but it definitely helped with preventing me from accessing that really dark place I would spiral into. Still the lowest dose, no other side effects at this point. Read More Read Less

I have a condition called Lichen Planus. I've had it for 8 years. After taking St John's Wort for 6 months, my skin and itching greatly improved. But I'm on Amlodipine for hypertension and was advised that st John's Wort reduces the effectiveness of my bp meds. I've now stopped taking it and my Lichen Planus has returned!! I'm desperately searching for something similar to take. HELP.
