Failure doesn't kill dreams, comfort does! Last week I had the pleasure to speak at the #GoGlobal event in #Bucharest #Romania about global trends in early stage investments and innovation. The event, produced in partnership of the great teams of How to Web UPGRADE 100 Raiffeisen Bank Romania and Arieli Capital was filled with entrepreneurs, industry leaders and investors providing an in depth view into the Bucharest tech scene. As part of my meetings with entrepreneurs and speaking at the panel alongside Bogdan Popa, member of the board st Raiffeisen Bank, moderated by Cristina Siscanu, we provided a global perspective at the challanges and opportunities of growing tech companies to global markets covering issues such as global investment trends, pushing revenue Vs pushing valuation, international investors perspective at early stage and more. With its ranking as the 10th most popular city in Europe to build a startup and with over 51% startup survival rate for the first five years Bucharest offers a great value for early stage entrepreneurs but when venturing into global markets a new set of challanges is presented to Romania’s startups. This is exactly why we presented them with the opportunity to join www.goglobal.ro Many entrepreneurs stay within the comfort zone of growing their company organically step by step, going from one local market to the next. This comfort zone kills startups as it makes them less competative in comparison to their international adversaries who are applying high risk, fast growth strategies. In Europe, the availability and ease of access to local markets, along with other reasons, results in less risk taking which could make EU startups less competitive for global investors. This results in low volumes of tech investments in many EU ecosystems compered to other global tech hubs. The fact is that the startup market is very different than the conventional business market as it is a high risk high reward market. For this reason, it rewards those who dare to push the envelope, grow fast and apply a global land grab strategy. This requires taking big risks, raising bigger amounts of money to allow for fast expansion and for reaching higher evaluations in a comparatively short amount of time.
