10 years. Most startups don’t make it past the five-year mark, but, Mondly by Pearson is celebrating a decade of unlocking language learning for more than 125 million people. Mondly beat the odds with a relentless focus on customer experience and exploring new exciting technology. And we’re just getting started. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡, 𝙞𝙣-𝙥𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 The future of Mondly by Pearson is all about bringing language learning to more devices, and more moments, in a more personalized way. “Before, to make the most of data like learning style or communications preferences we’d have to hard code, but AI opens up opportunities,” explains Co-Founder Alexandru Iliescu. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣 Ambitious plans need dedicated, talented people. “The Mondly team is a team of champions,” smiles Tudor, thinking back on how the team has grown from two brothers to 75 people across 16 countries. And counting. “I’m very proud that we’ve attracted significant new talent over the past two years”, says Giovanni Giovannelli, President of Pearson ELL. “The goal,” adds Brenden Mielke, VP Product, English Language Learning at Pearson, “is to have a really tight-knit group of A players. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙠𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩 What does the next ten years hold for Mondly by Pearson? “Mondly is part of a much broader proposition and vision”, explains Tudor, “that we’re the trusted brand that you can access everywhere in the world. “In Romania, sometimes kids from the countryside don’t have access to certain things that we have in the big cities,” explains Co-Founder Alexandru Iliescu. “I feel like if they can open an app on a tablet that the government provided and play Mondly, that’s great. “They can engage with a language at a basic level and think ‘I want to learn this language when I grow up’ — and maybe that triggers something in their education along the way. “It’s a glimpse — of what this could be and where it can take you. It’s an incentive to dream bigger”. Used by school children around the world, in 2021, Mondly’s solution for schools became an official supplier to the Israeli Ministry of Education. Now, more than 100,000 students are learning English, Hebrew, and Arabic with Mondly as part of the national curriculum in Israel. 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 But not all schools could afford to invest in language learning. From 2017 to 2022, Mondly partnered with many schools and charitable foundations to provide free Mondly access to children and adults from vulnerable environments. It was about unlocking opportunities — and the Mondly team wanted to go even further. Access to the best, intuitive technology — a MacBook — had changed what Alex and Tudor could achieve, and the brothers wanted to give others in Romania the same opportunity. It started with Universitatea Transilvania din Brașov. In 2019, the brothers donated a total of 30 iMacs, enabling students to develop iOS apps and leading to the Mondly iOS App Development course. At the start of 2020, Mondly expanded its community program to High Schools across Brașov and Făgăraș, investing in 40 iMacs across four computer labs. From sponsoring local students to attend international conferences or donating a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine to Brașov Children’s Hospital, Mondly looks for ways to facilitate access and open up opportunities across education, health, and sports. 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 Enabling more people to connect, to learn, and to reach their potential — this shared purpose bonds the Pearson and Mondly teams. “It’s very, very connected,” explains Giovanni Giovannelli, President of Pearson ELL, “the purpose that we have is to add life to a lifetime of learning — to create this vibrant, enriching learning experience designed for real-time impact. “This is exactly what Mondly does. “Shall we meet for lunch?” Serendipity. When Ebrahim Matthews, SVP Product at Pearson, emailed to enquire about collaborating, Alex happened to be on a three-month trip to London — and staying in the very building Ebrahim suggested for lunch. “We had a chat and towards the end of the lunch, I said, hey, we’d like to talk about buying your company. The rest is history,” remembers Ebrahim. 𝙏𝙤𝙥 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙧𝙨 Ebrahim had been given an important task. “We didn’t have a specific self-learner, consumer-grade solution that was compelling — that was feature rich and could excite users,” explains Pearson ELL President, Giovanni Giovannelli. So Ebrahim started the search. “We were looking for an app with multiple languages, with an established user base to demonstrate product-market fit, and that was affordable”, Ebrahim recalls. “My team and I developed a scorecard, and Mondly flew to the top”. 𝙎𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 In April 2022, the acquisition was finalized. In just over eight years since its launch, Mondly had gone from a team of four working in one room to being part of the world’s leading learning company with a team of 40 and more than 100 million app downloads. For the Mondly founders, there’s a real link between curiosity and innovation. “I want people to stay excited about discovering new things, so they keep their engine running — their brain ticking over with new inspiration on what’s possible,” says Co-Founder Alex Iliescu. That mindset is what led to initiatives like buying OpenAI subscriptions for the whole team — just in case. “Maybe someone will have a sleepless night, they’ll log on and play around, and they’ll discover something. Not everyone, not every time. But sometimes. 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙞𝙣 “People say ‘oh they were lucky’ or ‘they were entrepreneurs’. We were not. I was 33 when I started Mondly. I’d been a corporate IBM worker for 15 years — I was not always an inventor. “It’s so embedded in the Mondly team,” remarks Pearson’s CTO, Gian Paolo Perrucci, “that whenever there’s something new, they think, ‘ok, how can we use that?’”. It’s a mindset that keeps the Mondly team experimenting and improving. “They’re doing things that are really pushing the boundaries of technologies like VR and hands-free functionalities”, explains Gian Paolo. In March 2018, just six months after the release of Mondly VR, the team’s curiosity led to a new milestone: Augmented Reality (AR). By working closely with experts at Google, the Mondly team of just 21 employees was able to make AR in language learning a reality. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 From 2019 to 2021, the growing team of 40 expanded on their VR and AR offer, launching on OculusGO, Oculus Rift, Steam, and Oculus Quest. By 2022, users could even take their daily lessons in VR and Mondly became #2 in Top Language Apps by Downloads in Europe. Their curiosity had led to innovation. And that innovation had built Mondly’s reputation with its users and within the business community.
