Long read alert!🚨 Today is World #SustainableTransport Day! Here’s how Green City Kigali is working to make urban mobility sustainable and bring social, spatial, economic, and environmental benefits to Kinyinya residents. 🏗️ The masterplan proposes a Transit-Oriented Development approach. Homes, public spaces, and facilities will be built near public transport with easy access to walking and cycling paths for affordable, equitable travel. 🏍️ The Master Plan aims to cut trips by private cars and motorcycles from 50% to 22%, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, 40% of trips will be by high-quality public transport, and 38% will be on foot or by bike. 🛣️ A proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route system will provide fast, reliable connections between Kinyinya and the wider city. 🚶🏾 Accessible paths with gentle slopes will connect neighborhoods and the BRT, encouraging active travel. 🅿️ Car parking will be limited to one space for every six homes, with most parking located in multi-modal hubs. This will promote efficient land use by reducing the need for large roads and consolidating parking. About us
The Green City Kigali is a pioneering concept responding to emerging global issues. Africa’s cities are rapidly growing. The United Nations expect the continent’s population to double by 2050, most of which will be concentrated in urban areas. Addressing this tendency is both a challenge and an opportunity as many move to the city in the hope of finding employment and better living conditions. It is key that these trends do not lead to further growing inequalities, poverty and environmental degradation. The Government of Rwanda is committed to global goals and dedicated to set standards for sustainable urban development. Taking a holistic approach to integrate green building and design, efficient and renewable energy, recycling and inclusive living, the Green City Kigali will become a blueprint for other cities, for the region, for the continent. The planned neighbourhood will be the first Green City in Africa. A place of sustainable, affordable, green and inclusive urban living. A place full of life.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties, #COP29, is underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, focusing on global climate action and financing. Here are 10 ways we are advancing sustainable urban development at the City of Kigali: 1. Green public spaces: At the City of Kigali, we are expanding parks and recreational areas, such as car-free zones and Nyandungu Eco-Park, to improve air quality, support biodiversity, and create vibrant community spaces. 2. Tree planting and urban greening: Through our #IgitiCyanjye campaign, we are committed to planting over 3 million trees in five years to reduce urban heat and enhance biodiversity across Kigali. 3. Upgrading informal settlements: We are providing essential infrastructure in informal settlements to improve residents’ quality of life and help them remain within their communities. Projects like the Agatare Project, Mpazi Rehousing Project, and ongoing initiatives in Nyagatovu and Nyabisindu are examples of this commitment. 4. Sustainable transport: At the City of Kigali, we are enhancing public transport, exploring electric vehicle options, and expanding cycling and walking paths to reduce emissions and support a sustainable transport network. 5. Affordable green housing: We are developing eco-friendly housing using sustainable materials and designs, as demonstrated in the Mpazi Rehousing Project and planned for Green City Kigali in Kinyinya. 6. Waste management and recycling: At the City of Kigali, we are implementing recycling programs and public awareness campaigns to encourage responsible waste disposal across the community. 7. Climate-resilient infrastructure: We are developing flood mitigation projects and advanced water drainage systems to protect vulnerable areas from climate impacts. 8. Water conservation: We are investing in sustainable water systems, including rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling, to conserve water resources. 9. Renewable energy: At the City of Kigali, we are supporting solar energy projects in public spaces and low-income housing to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources. 10. Smart city initiatives: We are leveraging technology for smart lighting, data-driven waste collection, and efficient urban planning to improve the quality of life for our residents. #KigaliYacu #GreenRwanda #InvestInRwanda

What makes a sustainable community? 'With the scale of the climate crisis often seeming insurmountable, could homing in on the neighbourhood offer a more hopeful outlook?' 'For the Green City Kigali Project in #Rwanda by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, a #sustainable 16-hectare pilot site – a walkable #neighbourhood that includes a mix of #housing, #schools, #community buildings, #commercial space and #recreation areas – is being developed as a prototype for the larger #masterplan.' With thanks to FRAME Magazine for including Green City Kigali in their November magazine feature on sustainable neighbourhoods.
