Last week, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) renewed their partnership in the continued mission of building the data science capacity of Rwandan professionals across public, non-profit, and private sectors. Based on the impact of the previous partnership, NISR provided several AIMS graduates with successful Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences including internship and applied research opportunities. These WIL opportunities have allowed AIMS graduates to put into practice their mathematical science skills in providing data analytics to improve decision-making processes across the National Statistical System organizations in Rwanda. NISR and AIMS have developed a comprehensive Data Science Capacity Building Initiative (DSCBI), which opens a new chapter of the partnership to strengthen the NSS organizations with more evidence-based decision-making systems and processes. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT | 📍 CSIR International Convention Centre (Pretoria) As we conclude the 2024 activities for NEF Africa SDGs Week, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and South Africa Climate Action Network (SACAN) invite you to join us at the Science Forum South Africa for an impactful session that highlights the role of youth in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa. This is an opportunity to discover youth-led innovations, hear from changemakers, and explore how STEM is transforming the SDGs landscape, not only in Africa but around the world. The session will showcase concrete examples of youth-led innovations, demonstrating the role of STEM in advancing the SDGs in Africa. It will also highlight lessons learned from global partnerships, including the recently concluded UN World Data Forum 2024 in Medellín, Colombia. Special thanks to all our partners, especially the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for their support. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from the Ministry of Education and Training of the Kingdom of Eswatini at the AIMS Rwanda Centre. Their study tour in #Rwanda focused on exploring the country's success in implementing effective basic educational programs and policies. During their visit, we engaged in discussions about AIMS' role in advancing #STEM education, empowering young #Africans to become innovative leaders in science and technology, and other initiatives. We appreciate the opportunity to exchange ideas and foster mutual learning. Thank you for your visit. Sam Yala, Nokuthula Mdlovu, Nanikie N. Today, we were delighted to host Prof. Nick Monk, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the The University of Sheffield and the German Research Chair in Mathematics and its Applications at African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Ghana, for an inspiring lecture at AIMS Rwanda. Prof. Monk shared his expertise on using mathematical models to understand cell signaling, exploring how cells communicate with each other and interact with their environment. We’re grateful for his invaluable insights and for enriching the learning experience of our students at AIMS Rwanda. Thank you, Prof. Monk!
