Sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services in Rwanda access. Follow us and see our impact.
About us
In 2008, Water For People opened its office in Kigali/Rwanda, and has since been working with partners to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene services. By also collaborating with local institutions, Water For People is promoting sustainable access to these services. We're currently working with the districts of Kicukiro, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Karongi and Gisagara in Rwanda to bring drinking water, sanitation and hygiene solutions to their communities for generations to come. Ten more districts (Nyagatare, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Ngoma, Kirehe, Nyabihu, Ngororero, Ruhango, Nyanza, and Nyamagabe) are supported under the five-year, USAID-funded Isoko y'Ubuzima Project. The purpose of this project is to enhance the institutional strengthening and improve service delivery of water, sanitation and hygiene services and products.

Wastewater treatment facilities play a critical role in maintaining public #health, protecting water resources, and supporting sustainable #environmental practices. These facilities are essential for managing #wastewater from households, industries, and commercial spaces. However, the effectiveness of these systems heavily depends on the choice of #technology, management practices, and adherence to regulations. In Rwanda, as urbanization expands and the demand for wastewater treatment grows, ensuring these facilities operate efficiently is paramount. Today our USAID-funded Isoko y’Ubuzima team, in collaboration with WASAC Group and the Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure(MININFRA), validated an Assessment Report on the Performance of Wastewater Treatment Facilities in Kigali City and six fecal sludge treatment plants across Nyamagabe, Nyanza, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Kayonza, and Nyagatare Districts. This comprehensive report sheds light on significant disparities in technological approaches and management practices across the facilities. While some facilities utilize advanced technologies like Sequencing Batch Reactors, others rely on basic or intermediate systems, such as septic tanks or anaerobic baffled reactors. The report also proposes actionable recommendations to upgrade infrastructure, improve operational practices, and strengthen regulatory frameworks. Implementing these changes is key to optimizing wastewater treatment processes, protecting public health, and ensuring environmental sustainability. Today’s meeting marked a critical step in aligning efforts to enhance the performance of wastewater treatment facilities in Rwanda, highlighting the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive impactful change. Together, we’re advancing sustainable wastewater management for a healthier future! Stay tuned for the integrality of the report coming up in few days! #SustainableWASH IRCWASH Water For People

To celebrate #WorldToiletDay2024 and #GlobalHandwashingDay2024, in collaboration with Gisagara District and WASAC Group, Water for People launched today the Muyaga-Ramba Water Supply System that spans 56.41 kilometers and delivers #safe and #clean water to approximately 15,500 residents across 18 villages in the Muyaga and Ramba cells. Beneficiaries include critical public institutions such as #schools and #health posts, ensuring improved access to water and enhanced public health outcomes. This network also includes the construction of 24 improved toilets at E.P. Shyembe, G.S. Kabeza, and E.P. Mwendo schools. Additionally, each school has a girls' room and rainwater harvesting tanks to ensure a consistent #water supply, even during reduced water availability from the pipeline. The Muyaga-Ramba Water Supply System was built as part of the Gisagara #WASH Program initiated in December 2022 as a partnership between the district and the Government of #Rwanda through the Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure(MININFRA) and Water For People with an estimated total investment of $18.3 million. The Gisagara WASH Program aims to achieve full access to WASH services for all #communities, healthcare facilities, and schools by December 2027.
