CHM-KFUPM | Our Chemical Engineering department of College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM is delighted to welcome 𝗗𝗿. Jiabao Yi as a Distinguished Professor. 𝗗𝗿. Jiabao Yi earned his bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tianjin University, China (1992), and his PhD in Materials Science from the National University of Singapore in 2008. Dr. Yi worked previously as a Professor at the School of Engineering, University of Newcastle, Australia. His groundbreaking research spans advanced nanomaterials for energy, environmental, and biomedical applications, with notable contributions to mesoporous and 2D materials, magnetic nanoparticles, and first-principles calculations. His teaching and research expertise would significantly help grow CHE department to greater heights. Wishing him a pleasant and fruitful career on his journey at KFUPM.

The College encompasses four departments: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and Bioengineering. The departments attract some of the best and brightest people to study, with world class professors and researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The programs in the College are carefully designed to produce skillful and enthusiastic scientists and engineers. Our programs are aimed to equip graduates to establish themselves in a huge range of careers including the energy sector, oil and chemical industries, and biotechnologies. Our learning methodology helps our students transform into well-informed, engaged and empowered individuals. Students are encouraged to develop an academic plan that entails studying abroad, internships in their fields of interest, independent research and other extracurricular experiences that complement their learning.

Proud Moment CHM-KFUPM | College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM, is proud to announce Ruaa Abakar, a talented MS student in Chemical Engineering, secured 1st place in ChemLLMathon, an AI-focused hackathon held during the Chemindix2024 Conference, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. She and her team developed SOPGen, an innovative AI assistant that uses GPT-4 and a three-stage Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture to create precise, safety-compliant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) through natural conversation. Ruaa contributed significantly to the project, focusing on data collection, preprocessing, and optimization during an intense 24-hour sprint. This achievement showcases the power of combining AI and Chemistry to deliver impactful, real-world solutions. A huge congratulations to Ruaa and her teammates (Abrar Alotaibi, Reem Alshareef, and Iman Ahmed) for their outstanding collaboration! 🌟 College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM is proud of their achievements and would like to wish them more and more success in the future!

College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM CHM | King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM is proud to announce that our students from Bioengineering Department - KFUPM department and @Information & Computer Science department participated in iGEM Competition, International Genetically Engineered Machine competition in Paris Convention Centre, Paris. The iGEM Competition is a prestigious worldwide synthetic biology competition where teams of students from diverse fields work with mentors to build genetically engineered systems. Teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Over 400 multidisciplinary teams from more than 45 countries and regions showcased their synthetic biology solutions for humanity's most pressing problems, in areas of Healthcare, Environment, and Advancements. An international panel of over 400+ judges cast their votes to select the winning teams, and the results were impressive – with 209 teams earning gold medals, 138 teams earning silver, and 26 teams earning bronze. Founded in 2003 at MIT, iGEM has expanded significantly, now featuring teams from universities and high schools around the globe. Each year, over 400 teams and 5,000 participants, including teams from prestigious institutions like MIT, Stanford, Oxford, and the University of Tokyo, unite to address global challenges through innovative projects. Our students from Bioengineering, Latifat Abdulsalam (Advisor), Amjad Alshammari, Btoul Alkhalil, Abeer Alloush, Amal Khalil 𝗔𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗮, Rimas Alqahtani and Jood Faqera from Information and Computer Science KFUPM participated in this prestigious event representing KFUPM under the leadership of 𝗗𝗿. Amjad khalil, Professor, Bioengineering and advisory of 𝗠𝘀. Nawal Alshahrany, Lecturer, Bioengineering. We are proud to be the first team from Saudi Arabia to participate in iGEM, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the most renowned universities worldwide. CHM College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM | King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM is proud to announce that 𝗠𝘀. Taif Alhedmi, Chemical Engineering student, have won the 3rd place in the inaugural TecShift Hackathon, organized by Saudi Aramco. Saudi Aramco organized the TecShift Hackathon and created a platform for bright innovators, passionate problem-solvers, entrepreneurs and forward-thinkers to come together and tackle global sustainability challenges. Three students from our university, namely, Taif Alhedmi, Chemical Engineering Freshman, Fajr Alkhulayfi, Mechanical Engineering Freshman and Hamad Alhussaini, Industrial and Systems Engineering Prep Year, participated in this prestigious event in the hydrogen economy category, and they worked on a free net carbon system that produce green hydrogen directly from seawater powered by enhanced solar cells. By participating in this esteemed competition, our students had the opportunity to collaborate with industry experts and acquired tremendous knowledge to make this world a better, more sustainable place. CHM | KFUPM is immensely proud of these students’ achievements and wishes them more and more success in the future!

Irshad Baig! It is a great pleasure to welcome 𝗗𝗿. Irshad Baig as Assistant Professor at Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE). Dr. Baig received a Ph.D. from University of Twente, The Netherlands in 2021 and was as a Scientific Researcher in KAUST from 2023. Dr. Baig has over 8 years of experience in the field of polymeric membrane development, thin-film composite coatings, and membrane process intensification. He pioneered and upscaled an organic solvent-free approach to produce polymeric membranes having excellent water treatment performance. Dr. Baig’s research focuses on sustainable separations through the synergistic combination of materials science and chemical engineering. Mohannad Mayyas! It is a great pleasure to welcome 𝗗𝗿. Mohannad Mayyas as Assistant Professor at Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE). 𝘿𝙧. 𝙈𝙖𝙮𝙮𝙖𝙨 received a Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales in 2018. and was as a Senior Research Fellow position at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne since 2021. 𝘿𝙧. 𝙈𝙖𝙮𝙮𝙖𝙨 is recognized for his research on liquid metal alloys and their interfaces. Liquid alloys have unique surface characteristics that can be utilized in catalysis, synthesis of nano-metals, thermochemical processes, and metal refining applications. His work on liquid alloys led to the discovery of a new electrocapillary-controlled phase separation in these liquids, a phenomenon with promising applications in advanced manufacturing and extractive metallurgy. Jie Ren! It is a great pleasure to welcome 𝗗𝗿. Jie Ren as Assistant Professor at Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE). 𝗗𝗿. Jie Ren received a Ph.D. in construction materials from the University of Melbourne in December 2019 and a B.E. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tongji University, Shanghai, 2014. He is passionate about manufacturing various low-carbon cementitious materials via solid waste utilization and durability assessment, as well as nanocomposites applied in building materials. He is also interested in machine learning for the prediction of durability and mechanical performance of cement-based materials. Wishing him a pleasant and fruitful career on his journey at KFUPM. CHM-KFUPM | Our Chemical Engineering Department of College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM welcomes a new faculty member 𝘿𝙧. Florian J. Stadler! It is a great pleasure to welcome 𝘿𝙧. Florian J. Stadler as distinguished professor at Chemical Engineering Department (ChE). 𝘿𝙧. 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙧 obtained his doctorate in engineering from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany (2007). From 2009 to 2014 he was a professor at Chonbuk National University, South Korea and from 2014 to 2024 distinguished professor at Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China. He is working on rheology, mainly focusing on structure-property relationships in various systems, ranging from polyolefins and ionomers to hydrogels and supramolecular assemblies as well as special nanoparticles for adsorption, gas sensing, and photocatalysis. His teaching and research expertise would significantly help grow CHE department to greater heights. Wishing him a pleasant and fruitful career on his journey at KFUPM. Vasilije Manovic! It is a great pleasure to welcome 𝗗𝗿. 𝗩𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗷𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗰 at Chemical Engineering Department (ChE). 𝘿𝙧. 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙘 has over 25 years of experience in clean and sustainable energy and industrial processes. 𝘿𝙧. 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙘'𝙨 research is at the forefront of innovations in thermochemical conversion processes, carbon capture, utilization, and storage, as well as industrial decarbonization and direct air capture. He has pioneered the development of calcium looping, a technology critical for efficient CO₂ capture and utilization and has significantly contributed to the advancement of other carbon capture technologies, including chemical looping combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, and sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming. His work spans experimental research and modeling, from fundamental studies to pilot-scale demonstrations and commercialization. His teaching and research expertise would significantly help grow CHE department to greater heights. Wishing him a pleasant and fruitful career on his journey at KFUPM.
