CEMSE (The Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering) is one of the three academic Divisions of KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology). CEMSE offers graduate programs at M.S. and Ph.D. level as well as scientific research programs and initiatives. All the programs have been designed to meet the highest international standards for academic studies and research, and are carried out in CEMSE’s state-of-the-art facilities. At CEMSE, we strive to contribute to society through science by providing the best education to the next generation of scientists, supporting world-class researchers, tackling global issues with a multidisciplinary approach, and translating research into entrepreneurial activities and economic opportunities. Join us in welcoming Dr. Katerina Nik, the latest addition to our faculty in Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences at #KAUST. Dr. Nik's research focuses on #modeling and analyzing partial differential equations with applications in biology, mechanics and fluid dynamics. She is particularly interested in equations describing biological growth processes, thin fluid films and dispersive water waves. Poised to drive key initiatives at the University and national levels, Dr. Nik’s research on biological growth processes focuses on supporting marine conservation and environmental #sustainability in Saudi Arabia, particularly through #coral growth modeling. “Being part of such a vibrant, supportive environment is a unique opportunity. The rapid growth of #AI and the increasing complexity of neural networks demand efficient hardware solutions for power- and resource-constrained systems. In-memory computing (IMC) emerges as a promising approach, enabling AI to operate sustainably, even on low-power devices. KAUST Ph.D. candidate Olga Krestinskaya research on hardware-aware neural architecture search (HW-NAS) highlights how co-optimizing hardware and software can lead to high-performance, energy-efficient AI accelerators. Last week, the CEMSE Division at KAUST hosted 12 talented students from 11 universities worldwide for the Applied Mathematics School (AMS). During the #AMS program, participants explored advanced topics, including #AI training methods, scientific machine learning, data sparsity, and multigrid methods in medicine. Beyond the academic sessions, they experienced #Saudi Arabia's rich culture and KAUST inspiring campus. "My visit to KAUST for the school was an amazing experience. The sessions were very informative, and I learned a lot from the professors and participants while also connecting with like-minded peers. Besides the sessions, I enjoyed exploring the culture and visiting historical Jeddah, which was fascinating.
