Well done Luca Saponari Thanks for the opportunity to share our work University of Edinburgh Marine Science Society

We were lucky enough to receive a talk from Luca Saponari the other night, covering the ‘Ecosystem restoration success in Cousin island special reserve, Seychelles’.  Luca works at Nature Seychelles, as the senior science and technical field officer, with a background in tropical coral reef ecology. He discussed the four restoration principles, coral gardening concept, assisted recovery of corals (ARC) and much more. Many opportunities are offered for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including voluntary work and data collection for dissertation projects! Massive thank you to Luca Saponari for taking the time to give a talk – super inspiring stuff!! Go check them out: Nature Seychelles

Dr. Nyawira Muthiga (WIOMSA President from 2001-2008) was honoured yesterday with the Society of Conservation Biodiversity (SCB) Marine Program’s Distinguished Service Award at #IMCC7. She was recognised for her outstanding contributions to regional marine conservation and innovative research in coral reef conservation.🪸 Dr. Nirmal Jivan Shah, Nature Seychelles Director and past president of WIOMSA, presented the award, noting Dr. Nyawira as an embodiment of a “cross-border and transdisciplinary scientist who breaks down barriers and silos in science.” WIOMSA and The Network of Women in Marine Science (WiMS) celebrates Dr. Nyawira and her far-reaching impact in conservation and for her continued support to early career scientists.🌊

Last week, I hosted SPCS Talk Vol. 11 with Corinne Julie of Nature Seychelles about natural resource co-management and the LEAP Project, supported by International Climate Initiative. Here's what I learned: 🤝 Trust is paramount. Building trust should inform every step of the process — and co-management is an ongoing process. This meant LEAP's team entering stakeholder assessments and educational initiatives from a place of humility and service, establishing mutually beneficial relationships with community members. 📝 Buy-in comes from understanding of benefits. One of LEAP's challenges was overcoming low awareness of the links between livelihood and environment. Therefore, the team had to engage citizens, local authorities, and others to demonstrate the power of co-management. 👭 Partnerships must span multiple levels. Especially for a farsighted project like LEAP, stakeholders shouldn't be completely grassroots or completely governmental. Rather, there should be a broad base of support to facilitate a wide range of initiatives in pursuit of ultimate objectives. Say hello to Shocking-pink Red, our new Seychelles Magpie Robin (Copsychus sechellarum, Pi Santez) chick on Cousin Island. The team is seen here ringing the chick and collecting other data. Birds are ringed for monitoring. This way each bird can be identified individually through a combination of different coloured rings. On the right leg is a metal ring with a unique ID from SAFRING and a red ring, which identifies Cousin. On the left, are two rings in a unique combination of colours, used to visually identify the bird. Ringing is best done when the bird is still a chick in the nest. There is a window of time for ringing. Too early and the ring can fall off and snag on the foot. Too late and the bird can panic and you have what's known as a nest explosion where the chick fledges through panic or disturbance even if they are not ready to leave the nest. Each nest is closely monitored so it is known when it is possible to ring. The process involves removing it from the nest. The bird is weighed in a bag before being ringed. Measurements are taken along with a blood sample. Once this is done it is put back in the nest. The soil is disturbed for the parents to find insects they can take and feed their chick afterwards. Once fledged, the newly rung chick can then be located to confirm a successful nest. 📷 Christopher Rose #cousinisland #seychelles #birds #conservation #endemicspecies

To commemorate #worldcleanupday Nature Seychelles, Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, the Grand Anse Mahé District Administration and Grand Anse Mahé Primary School, joined forces to clean Grand Anse Mahe beach and inner trails on Friday, 20th September. The group of 45 adults and students was divided into three teams: two teams headed north and south along the beach toward the wetlands on either side, while the third team cleaned the start of the trail near the primary school’s entrance gate. Some students also had the opportunity to plant native trees along the trail. The students then sorted the trash collected and were surprised at the items found and the amount since the beach is cleaned daily. A total of 37 kg of trash was collected, consisting mainly of glass bottles (10 kg) and PET bottles (8 kg). The remaining 18 kg was made up of beer cans, slippers, Styrofoam, plastic bottles, and toys. The cleanup is the first in a series of community engagement activities under Nature Seychelles’ European Union in Mauritius & Seychelles funded #Wetlands of Hope project. The project aims to increase community participation in wetland conservation efforts. 📷 Nature Seychelles, Farah Nasser. #CleanUp #seychelles #leaveonlyfootprints #plasticpollution #stoppollution

The wonderful kids from the Green Generation Seychelles Eco camp paid us a visit at our Centre for Ocean Restoration Awareness and Learning (CORAL) on Praslin. They had an amazing time with the Reef Rescuers exploring coral reefs, learning about marine life, and getting hands-on experience with coral restoration techniques. They left feeling inspired and motivated to help protect our oceans. 📷 @lize_underwater @greengenerationseychelles #oceans #coralreef #corals #education #awareness #ReefRescuers
