Empowering Arholma with Next-Generation Microgrid Technology. At Vattenfall Eldistribution, we are exploring innovative hardware and software solutions to harness household flexibility and enhance the resilience of our microgrid on Arholma.   Arholma, a beautiful island in Stockholm’s northern archipelago, is home to one of Europe’s most advanced microgrids, deployed by Vattenfall Eldistribution, R&D and Network Solutions. This microgrid is designed to take over operations for the island in the event of a power outage.   To ensure reliable performance and enable islanding during periods of high demand, we are now engaging with our customers to explore how they can help in a disrupted situation by reducing their consumption to optimize the performance of our microgrid.   The project, called Next Generation Arholma (NextGen), has initiated dialogue with approximately 30 households on the island. Together with leading technology partners, we are pushing the boundaries of flexibility and microgrid management: #Plexigrid is providing cutting-edge solutions to monitor flexibility and help us plan, oversee, and execute Distributed Energy Resources (DER) operations on the island. #Ngenic is enabling smart control of heat pumps, optimizing energy usage. #BL!XT Tech is delivering smart, programmable switches that provide real-time data on power and voltage, as well as control over key loads during critical situations.   Our microgrid software has been developed in collaboration with #Loccioni and #RevoltSRL, two Italian partners who are global leaders in microgrid hardware and software. Together, we are building a solution to extend islanding capabilities and improve energy security for Arholma.   Our vision is to start testing this during 2025. This is one of the most exciting projects I’ve had the privilege to launch in my career, and I can’t wait to see it come to life. This feels surreal. We’ve closed ERV Fund I! Energy is the foundation of human progress, and electrification is the key to an abundant future.
