An Overview of Scope 1, 2, and 3 in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Understanding greenhouse gas emissions is crucial for companies committed to sustainability. Emissions are categorized into three scopes. By addressing all three scopes, organizations can gain a comprehensive view of their climate impact and foster a more sustainable business model. Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, like fuel combustion and company vehicles. Reducing these often involves improving energy efficiency and transitioning to renewables. Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity. Companies can reduce these by investing in renewable energy and enhancing energy efficiency. Scope 3: Other indirect emissions across the supply chain, including product use and disposal. These are often the most complex and require collaboration with suppliers and customers to address.
