  • 🚀 We're getting an upgrade to our ACAP application front ends! The nature of an ACAP application (a background service that is installed once and then runs year after year producing data that is pushed to another system) makes the back end much more important than the front end. For this reason, we have invested heavily in tools and frameworks for back end creation and DevOps tools for the back end to make sure that the application is robust and bug free. Since the front end is normally used so little and often only by a single or a few system integrators (not the end user of the system), our front end frameworks has fallen behind. Now it is time to change this! We welcome Robin Starke, Joel Axelsson och Oliver Thulin to our team who will spend the next few months helping us build a modular and reusable framework using modern languages and tools. 🛠️ What are important for a robust and user friendly front end? 🛠️ A good system for creating unit tests is one of our favourite things on the list. A strongly typed language that prevents subtle bugs that shows up during runtime and instead causes the compilation to fail is another thing we value highly. A component-based framework not only makes it easier to create isolated modules adhering to the "Single Responsibility Principle", but also makes reuse between different applications easier and reduces the maintenance effort needed to keep all applications up to date. Elements that can be used to create intuitive interfaces that users can easily relate to using mental models (this is called "affordance" in the design world) will ensure our users always know how to configure our applications. We're looking forward to getting our new framework that will make our ACAP applications for the Axis network cameras even better looking and working in the future!

  • Have you seen that you can now try our QR code detection and decoder ACAP application in the Axis Virtual Loan tool? If you don't have an Axis camera at your desk, it is now easier than ever to try our edge application which can find and decode QR codes. Axis was very helpful and added a spinning QR code in the middle of the camera room where you will find the cameras from the Axis Virtual Loan Tool. Our applications are assembled based on your request and requirements. The QR detector and decoder is only one of the many computer vision elements that we have. This module can be combined with different input elements (such as Optical Character Recognition) and different output elements (such as HTTPS push, Axis/ONVIF events, AWS Kinesis Data Streams, MQTT and much more). If you need a module that we do not already have, we can always create it for you. This modular ecosystem make the flexibility infinite while keeping the development and maintenance cost under control. Reach out to us today to learn more!

  • Did you know that you can make your network connected strobes and sirens intelligent? With a simple edge application running directly in the strobe as a plugin, the strobe itself can ping or query other network devices and set the color or alarm based on the response. You can use this to monitor if another network device is alive, e.g a network camera or an industrial PLC. But you can also make custom API queries and parse the response, like setting the color of the strobe based on the status of the latest CI/CD job in your continuous integration pipeline, or to indicate the soil moisture from a network connected sensor. All intelligence can be placed in the on-device plugin, meaning that there is no need for another hardware device that should control the strobe. The best part is that you can preload the edge application in the strobe before you send it to your customers, all they need to do then is to connect to strobe to a network and it will start functioning.
