⚠️ On average, annually, 40% of the population of Ghana is at risk of being affected by a disaster. NADMO, Ghana's National Disaster Management Organisation, needs to understand where people are, and how they move, to better plan for and respond to disasters. 🇬🇭 As part of our ongoing work with NADMO through the #Data4Good project with Ghana Statistical Service and Telecel Ghana, we've met with representatives from NADMO to discuss the value of mobile phone data for decision-making, and how they are using the mobility information we provide them with for disaster preparedness and response. 💬 In our latest video, hear from Mr Kelly Kelely Degboe, Head of ICT and Emergency Operations Centre, and Mr Kofi Koranteng Abrowkwa, now Ex-Director of Policy, Planning, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, as they share their perspectives on the impact of human mobility on disaster management, the value of the dynamic risk maps generated using mobile phone data, and how mobility estimates derived from this data source have helped them understand the situation on the ground when responding to the floods in the Lower Volta region in October 2023. 🤝 Collaborating with key partners before a disaster strikes is crucial for establishing effective response protocols and ensuring that we can provide timely support when it matters most. Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/dmCf37GP #DisasterManagement #NADMOGhana #Mobility #data4dev #Partnerships4TheGoals The Data for Good partnership, a unique public-private partnership and not-for-profit initiative between Ghana Statistical Service, Telecel Ghana (previously Vodafone Ghana), and Flowminder, to support evidence-based decision-making for the wellbeing of all in Ghana. The Data for Good project has been made possible thanks to funding from the Vodafone Foundation (now Telecel Foundation), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Digital Health Innovation Acceleration Programme (DHIAP) powered by the WFP Innovation Accelerator and BMZ digilab, and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

❔️What are the pathways to impact when using mobile phone data for policy-making? What are the pre-requisites and critical inputs that are necessary for such initiatives? Who are the stakeholders to identify, and engage with? How to achieve a win-win agreement for all parties, including operators and national statistical offices? How to fund and sustain such work? What are the data characteristics and quality aspects to consider? How to process such data in a secure and privacy-preserving manner? What are the various data sharing and infrastructure models to consider? How to assess your country's level of maturity for mobile phone data for policy initiatives? How to use mobile phone data for policy applications? How to apply learnings from existing projects and programmes? 💬 These are some of the training topics, discussions and activities we conducted this week for The World Bank Group Global Data Facility (WB-GDF)'s programme on mobile phone data for policy making, in collaboration with International Telecommunication Union, Positium and Nommon. 💡 Setting up mobile phone data initiatives is complex and requires thoughtful planning. From strategic partnerships, methodology and infrastructure, to governance, data access models and legal agreements, a lot of decisions are to be made. 🤩 We were very pleased to train and share our expertise with ~100 participants from the 18 countries that form the 1st Cohort for this WB-GDF programme. We look forward to seeing these discussions continue over the coming months! #Partnerships4TheGoals #data4dev #data4good #MobilePhoneData #CDRdataAnalytics

🌐 This week, The World Bank Group's Global Data Facility is running 'Mobile Phone Data (MPD) Program for Policy' workshops, introducing the 1st programme cohort countries to the world of MPD analytics for policy-making. 💬 As part of this engagement, we're happy to be delivering a series of training sessions with International Telecommunication Union, Positium and Nommon, as well as sharing our learnings on the key considerations for setting up MPD initiatives. 🇬🇭 This morning, we were very pleased to join Prof Samuel Annim from Ghana Statistical Service on stage to discuss our Ghana experience. A key take-away is that countries cannot underestimate the importance of data governance, privacy and ethics for successful MPD initiatives. 💡 Cathy Riley, our Strategic Partnerships Director, was then joined on stage by Siim Esko from Positium to discuss the power of capacity strengthening and the necessity of using methodological and technological standards. Watch this space for more learnings! #Partnerships4TheGoals #DataSustainability #CDRdataAnalytics #Data4dev #MPDpolicy

🇨🇩 Join our team: We are seeking a Kinshasa-based Project Consultant to provide comprehensive project support to ensure the successful implementation of our Equity Accelerator Fund (EAF) activities. The EAF programme aims to reduce the number of zero-dose children by 35% by 2025, focusing on 11 provinces. 📊 As a technical partner of the DRC’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), we are producing population mobility statistics through the analysis of pseudonymised mobile operator data (Call Detail Records), particularly focusing on four provinces: Haut Katanga, Kasai, Maniema, and Tshopo. 💉 We are also applying our optimisation algorithm to recommend optimal locations for vaccination sites, which can be selected for the EPI’s advanced and mobile vaccination strategies. 🤝 As well as producing these data products, we work closely with the EPI and other partners to ensure that the data are integrated into their decision-making processes and contribute to achieving equitable vaccination coverage. 🤩 💬 We were thrilled to take part today in a lively discussion at International Telecommunication Union's 19th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (#ITUWTIS24). Our Managing Director, Daniel Power, facilitated a panel discussion on Mobile Phone Big Data: From Methods to Implementation. The conversation highlighted key factors in unlocking mobile operator data to shape and inform policy and decision-making. By tapping into this incredible resource, we have the opportunity to strengthen the data ecosystem, providing governments, institutions, and humanitarian and development actors with the insights they need to tackle today's most pressing global challenges. 👩💻 📈 We're equally excited to be actively supporting The World Bank Global Data Facility as it launched the first cohort of its Mobile Phone Data (MPD) Program for Policy. This initiative is a significant step forward in expanding the use of mobile phone data to help create more informed policies and make meaningful contributions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), and we're happy to have supported the World Bank with strategic thinking for this programme! #Partnerships4TheGoals #Data4Dev #data4good Photo credit: ITU/ D. 📣 #JobAlert: GIS Analyst and Trainer (UK-based) In addition to recruiting a GIS Consultant (training & data coordination) (Nairobi-based) (see our post last Friday 👀), we're also looking for a GIS Analyst and Trainer (UK-based) in preparation for a mass rollout of data products in the REACH project, including microplan support maps, that teams on the ground will use to plan and deliver vaccinations at new outreach and mobile locations. This role will assist with the production of these data products and provide capacity strengthening to ensure that end users are able to utilise them to best effect. ❔ What is the REACH project? We are part of the International Rescue Committee (IRC)-led REACH Consortium, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The REACH programme is delivering immunisation services in Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Powered by a network of global and local partners, the REACH Consortium works to extend services to those beyond the reach of government systems and ensure that no child, wherever they live, is left behind. 🔎 Find out more about the role & how to apply: https://lnkd.in/dNkqTfRt #Geospatial #JobOpportunities #GISjobs #data4dev
