“Don’t plan for if, plan for when.” These powerful words from Mark Phillips, Chief Executive of the Rail Safety & Standards Board, set the tone for this month's Cyber Resilience Conference. The event, organised by Marc Silverwood for Northern, with support from Angel Trains, brought together leaders across the UK rail industry to address the critical issue of cybersecurity. At the conference, Digital Programme Manager George Copeland shared Northern’s robust ‘identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover’ strategy, a cornerstone of their efforts to safeguard 360 ‘digital’ trains and 36,000 digital assets. Icomera has acted as the primary technology provider and integrator for Northern’s ‘Digital Train’ programme since 2016, responsible managing onboard cybersecurity. Our Head of On Train Digitalisation, Martin Shaw, presented Icomera’s approach to real-time asset monitoring and incident management. A key takeaway? Cyber resilience isn’t just a technology challenge—it’s a collaborative effort requiring cooperation, collaboration and trust across the industry. Icomera has signed an authorised reseller agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink to provide Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite connectivity to trains. Satellite connectivity will complement the existing wireless technologies that Icomera intelligently aggregates and prioritises based on time, location, and demand - ensuring a robust, economic and reliable solution. This is an incredible opportunity for the rail industry. The inner city 5G experience will be available everywhere, and passenger experiences and operational visibility can be transformed. We expect the first installations of our rail certified satellite connectivity solutions to begin in Q1 2025. Read more: https://lnkd.in/erJPtqTx #Starlink #Satellite #Connectivity #Rail

Our DG8 team worked alongside partners SPL Powerlines and Colas Rail to deliver Project Electra. A stellar example of collaboration within the EQUANS and wider Bouygues Group, the project involved testing 75km of newly installed overhead line electrification (OLE) on the Midland Mainline in the UK. As part of the project delivery team, DG8 carried out the modification design work to for the installation of the instrumented pantograph to the Class 91 and to enable the Class 91 to be powered from the adjacent Mk3 coaching stock. This was so the pantograph could be raised and lowered as required during the testing. Industry professionals highlight cellular networks (62%), satellite constellations (56%), and private trackside networks (29%) as key technologies for enhancing connectivity. - The general preference for utilising current cellular network technologies is due to their widespread deployment and continual evolution, for example, the 5G rollout. - The strong interest in satellite Internet, especially LEO satellites, suggests an awareness of their potential to offer high-speed connectivity, particularly along routes that traditional cellular networks may not cover effectively. - The lower interest in private trackside networks still reflects recognition of their potential to offer enhanced data throughput in rural locations or in challenging environments such as tunnels, albeit with the understanding that such networks can be more costly and time-intensive for a rail operator or infrastructure owner to create and maintain. By taking a hybrid approach and intelligently utilising a range of different connectivity technologies together in tandem, transport operators will be best placed to gain maximum value well into the future.
