Meet Jessica Karlsson, Lightbringer’s New Product Specialist! 👋 We were thrilled to welcome Jessica to the Lightbringer team at the beginning of October! Born in Melbourne and raised in Malmö, Jessica brings an exciting blend of life science expertise and a deep enthusiasm for innovation. Fun fact: Jessica is a former competitive tennis player who once repaired a pair of shoes using an old library card! 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚! 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳? I was born in Melbourne, Australia, but have lived the majority of my life in Malmö. Travel has always been something I adore, along with playing tennis, golf, and exploring all kinds of farmer’s markets. With a background in life science, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with outstanding researchers and start-ups. Now, I’m excited to begin my journey as a product specialist, having previously gained experience from the opposite side of the industry. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿? Since I have worked in medical research, I know how inaccessible patent-knowledge can be. Lightbringer is laying the foundation for future innovative solutions and supporting inventors, and I am excited to aid in developing technology that I genuinely believe in. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞? I think that you need to have a keen eye for technical solutions, but also have genuine enthusiasm for social situations and collaborative environments. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫? Getting the chance to do further work with amazingly talented people and innovators. I want to learn as much as I possibly can and help other people with the knowledge I gain. 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥/𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭? I am actually quite good at tennis, I used to compete in the sport when I was younger. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠? I keep inventing new ways to repair my clothes, most recently I fixed a pair of shoes with an old library card. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? Innovation is a process of advancing, improving or developing a solution to a pre-existing problem. To me, it means developing a meaningful change that can truly benefit people. Please join us in welcoming Jessica to the Lightbringer team!

Prolific inventor Bengt Lindoff is back again, sharing insights from being part of more than 2.000 patents. This time, Lindoff is sharing some thoughts about why collaborative teams win: “This collaborative spirit aligns with my own journey, where I've been involved in over 600 inventions—many times, the initial spark came from a team member, and together, we shaped it into a patent-worthy invention.” Link to the full article in the comments section.

🌍 Round Table 1: The Path to a Greener Europe through EU Initiatives 🌱 During the first round table of the European Session, moderated by Ola Wassvik, CRO and co-founder of Lightbringer, panellists Francesco Matteucci, former Program Manager in Advanced Materials for Energy and Environmental Sustainability at the EIC; Luis Guerra, Spanish National Contact Point for the EIC Accelerator; Jonathan Langton, Evolution Project Manager for European Programmes; and Enrique Serrano, CEO of cleantech company B5tec, discussed EU initiatives to support deep-tech startups, particularly in the cleantech sector. 🔑 Public vs Private Funding for Startups Public funding offers significant resources but is highly competitive and the whole process is often slower than other funding routes. Startups must ensure that they fit with the objectives of the program they are applying to and be prepared for the time commitment necessary to secure these funds. Transparency is crucial to take the decision to apply. If so, consultants or National Contact Points can help you navigate the complexities and nuances of this funding route. 💡 Funding in Europe vs. Global Competitors European startups face stiff competition from global players like China and the US, where state-backed funding and favorable regulations create significant advantages. Opportunities in Europe often come later in the startup lifecycle, leaving early-stage companies vulnerable. While China excels at scaling technologies affordably, Europe must focus on fostering innovation and protecting emerging industries to stay competitive. ⭐ Building a Stronger European Ecosystem The EIC and EU initiatives are advancing in de-risking investment and fostering cleantech innovation, yet challenges persist in Southern Europe. To retain talent and enhance innovation, Europe must address disparities in the market. Strengthening regional collaboration and consistency could make it a more appealing destination for startups and support the transition to a greener future. ⏩ Want to hear more insights from these experts?
