BIOPATH Forestry Policy Lab 2: Advancing Biodiversity in the Forest Sector On February 6th, BIOPATH hosted a Policy Lab in Lund, the second one with focus on the forestry sector. The workshop brought together diverse stakeholders from Södra, Skogsstyrelsen (Swedish Forest Agency), Naturskyddsföreningen (SSNC), and Swedbank with researchers from the Mistra BIOPATH programme. Using the latest findings on forest owners' willingness to adopt biodiversity-friendly practices through payment schemes as a starting point, the event explored how potential funding mechanisms could incentivize biodiversity conservation in Sweden’s forests. What did we discuss? Stakeholders shared insights on key questions such as: Who should bear the cost of biodiversity preservation — state actors, forest owners, or private investors? How can public and private funding models be blended effectively? What role should financial institutions and market incentives play in conservation efforts? Main Takeaways: Encouraging interest: the majority of forest owners surveyed are willing to accept payments for biodiversity conservation when given a degree of freedom in their decision-making. Shared responsibility: Forest owners shouldn’t bear the full financial burden; responsibility should extend across the entire value chain. Market mechanisms: The need for a transparent and credible market for biodiversity credits was highlighted, though challenges remain in ensuring ecological benefits and investor trust. Next Steps: BIOPATH will now explore pilot projects to investigate an effective policy instrument for the benefit of biodiversity in the forest sector. There seems to be a huge demand for nature markets, but for them to work, we need to design them right. That's what Biopath is going to work on - with you if you want!?"
