New Study Sheds Light on Power of Sharing Lived Experience to Engage Policymakers with Substance Use Research 👉 This study aimed to experimentally test different narrative frames as tools for optimizing policymakers’ engagement with Substance Use and Substance Use Disorder research. 💡 The study highlights the power of people with lived experience sharing their stories in optimizing policymakers’ engagement with Substance Use and Substance Use Disorder research, which is critical for improving the use of rigorous, unbiased scientific research in Substance Use and Substance Use Disorder policies and improving public health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dHAcSK_i #PublicDiscourse #AlcPolPrio #Advocacy #Communication #LivedExperience #AlcoholPolicy #PolicyChange #AlcoholIssues

"This suggests that the current narrative of ‘responsible alcohol consumption’ may penalise people with lower levels of education.” - Kilian C, Liebig M, Manthey J. ⚡ New Study Questions Policy Rationale Based on ‘Informed Consumer Choice’ Premise 👉 In this exploratory study, the researchers investigated the distribution of alcohol harm literacy in a convenience sample of adults residing in Germany. ⚡ In the study sample, insufficient alcohol harm literacy was recorded in 47.8% of men and 41.1% of women. 🚨 Respondents with low education were about 1.35 times more likely to have an insufficient alcohol harm literacy compared to those with high education. 💡 As people with lower levels of education were more likely to be classified as having insufficient alcohol health literacy, the study shows that alcohol harm literacy is significantly lower in people with low or medium levels of education compared to those with high education. This means that the prevailing narrative of ‘responsible alcohol consumption’ penalizes people with lower levels of education in Germany. 🤝 To increase alcohol harm literacy across all population groups, a comprehensive strategy is needed, including - effective prevention programs in schools, - easily accessible information on alcohol use, - information provided in simple language and languages other than German, as well as - health warning labels on alcohol containers. #AlcoholHarms #AlcoholPolicy #AlcPolPrio #HealthLiteracy #AlcoholAwareness #AlcoholIssues #PublicDiscourse #HealthForAll #SocialJustice https://lnkd.in/dDcM7Eh9

Alcohol policy is a powerful catalyst to reach #HealthForAll https://lnkd.in/dAZwzsP2 On #UHCDay we bring attention to the potential of #AlcoholPolicy for reaching universal health coverage, strengthening healthcare systems, and providing much-needed care for people with alcohol use disorder: ⚡ Alcohol is one of the biggest and least recognized barriers to universal health coverage (UHC) and sustainable healthcare systems. 🚨 The health, social, and economic burden of alcohol is rising, especially in low- and middle-income countries which already can ill-afford the productivity losses, healthcare costs, and household impoverishment due to alcohol. ⚡ At least 7% of the global adult population have an AUD. But health systems are ill-equipped to adequately deal with only this specific type of alcohol harm. But change is possible through evidence-based alcohol policy action, such as raising alcohol taxes and placing common sense limits on alcohol availability. 💡 In 2010, the World Health Report wrote: “Raising taxes on alcohol to 40% of the retail price could have [a big] impact. Estimates for 12 low-income countries show that [alcohol] consumption levels would fall by more than 10%, while tax revenues would more than triple to a level amounting to 38% of total health spending in those countries. Even if only a portion of the proceeds were allocated to health, access to services would be greatly enhanced.“ 👏 A 2022 study from Lithuania found that implementing common sense limits on alcohol availability led to marked reductions in Emergency Room visits for alcohol poisoning in men. Clearly, it’s on the government to make full use of alcohol policy to bring healthcare and good health to all people. #UniversalHealthCoverage #UHCDay2024 #UHC #Health #MentalHealth Juan E. Exposing Alcohol Industry Penetration of Governments in 24 Jurisdictions Around the World https://lnkd.in/dSQg7g-n 🕵♂️ 24 diverse jurisdictions reported high levels of alcohol industry penetration. 🚨 Specifically, all indicated the presence of transnational alcohol corporations, which have enormous resources to market their products and influence policy both nationally and locally. ⚡ Almost two-thirds reported government officials or politicians having held roles in the alcohol industry, suggesting it is common for the industry and decision-makers to have close relationships. 🤦♀️ There were also multiple examples of government partnerships or agreements with the alcohol industry as forms of CSR, as well as government incentives for the alcohol industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. #BigAlcoholExposed #AlcoholHarms #CDoH #ConflictOfInterest #AlcoholIssues

The Societal Costs of Alcohol in Urban China https://lnkd.in/dQYw-3KN This study quantified the economic burden due to modifiable risk factors in urban China. 🚨 Three modifiable risk factors accounted for half of the total attributable societal cost: tobacco (23.7%), alcohol (13.3%), and dietary risks (12.2%). ⚡ The study also found that alcohol is the largest contributor to societal costs for age 20–44. 👏 This underscores the urgent need for policy-level solutions to address the major avoidable risk factors, including alcohol. #AlcoholHarms #SecondHandHarm #EconomicCosts #AlcoholPolicy #AlcPolPrio #HealthForAll #EconomicProductivity
