  • ⏳ Depopulation is reshaping rural regions across Europe. How can policymakers respond? Many communities are seeing declining birth rates, fewer young returnees, and growing reliance on migration for population growth. Some regions are managing to reverse negative trends—what can we learn from them? Nordregio is hosting the PREMIUM_EU webinar "Rural re-population: Attracting skilled migrants" on 29 April, exploring questions like: ❓ What are early indicators of population decline? ❓ Which European regions are most at risk? ❓ What drives skilled migrants to move and settle in rural areas? ❓ Which attractiveness tactics work and what policies make a difference? Speaker highlights: 🎙️ Peter Meister-Broekema, Hanze University of Applied Sciences 🎙️ Becky Arnold, NIDI, Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute Institute 🎙️ Claudius Stroehle, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)  🎙️ Michał Wanke, Krakow University of Economics Register for research-based insights and contribute to the discussions on strategies for rural resilience: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ditb4MFZ #HorizonEU #depopulation #demography #braindrain #migration #mobility #resilience #ruraldevelopment

  • 🏔️ Iceland’s nature attracts millions of visitors, but tourism’s future depends on sustainability. 📊 Tourism is the backbone of many Icelandic regions, generating up to 50% of local labour income in some municipalities. ⚠️ While tourism is important for the economy, it is also a major source of emissions. 🏕️ With the green transition introducing new costs, some communities will feel the impact more than others. 🟢 How will the green transition affect tourism-dependent communities? 💡 Our report takes stock of the emerging challenges to Iceland’s tourism sector arising from ambitious climate and environmental goals. Focus is on the regional economic impacts and policy options to minimise the green transition’s rural economic costs and regional disparities. 📖 Download the full report for more: https://lnkd.in/d7FF_vvQ #GreenTransition #SustainableTourism #RegionalDevelopment #NordicRegion

  • 🪂 How can mission-oriented innovation policies (MOIPs) drive transformative change in Nordic regions? 💬 "Recognising the importance of the regional context and avoiding one-size-fits-all approaches is fundamental when designing mission-oriented policies." Alberto Giacometti, Nordregio. Our newest policy brief explores the extent of implementation and possibilities of MOIPs at supra-national, national, and regional levels within Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. This is some of what we’ve learned: 💡 MOIPs are gaining traction but their stage and interpretation vary across countries and regions. 💡 The national and regional contexts offer different possibilities for MOIPs. 💡 Regions like Northern Jutland, Ostrobothnia, and Västerbotten show different ways to interpret and localise mission approaches. Read the full policy brief here: https://lnkd.in/eca97Enh Authored by Alberto Giacometti and Sigrid Jessen.

"At Nordregio, I get to apply my skills in an international setting, connecting local and global perspectives through research." A warm welcome to the team, Daniel Pils! 👏 Our new Junior GIS Analyst/ Cartographer joined Nordregio earlier this month, bringing experience from urban and regional studies and working with GIS and land use statistics. 🌎 Daniel discovered GIS on his journey from the rural village of Grebo to the vibrant streets of Melbourne (and ultimately to our vibrant Skeppsholmen office)—combining his interests in geography, maps, and design. His five years in Melbourne inspired a fascination with how cities are designed and experienced. "That inspiration led me to rethink my direction, drawing me back to my early interest in geography. I became fascinated by how cities function, how people interact with their surroundings, and how urban spaces evolve over time." 🌟 An excellent fit for Nordregio! 👉 Head to Daniel's staff page to read his spatial story and get to know him better.

  • The Nordic countries are often seen as some of the most stable, equal, and well-functioning societies in the world. But in recent years, something has shifted. ⚖️ Regional divides. Social tensions. Political shifts. Rising support for populist parties. Sense of being left behind. What’s driving this shift? And how does the green transition factor in? 📅 On 26 March (13.00-14.30 CET), our webinar on 'Navigating Nordic discontent' will explore the interplay between rising inequalities, political discontent, and the green transition in the Nordic Region. 📍 Sign up now to join the discussion: https://lnkd.in/dwd5VxXm #SocialJusticeDay #GreenTransition #NordicDiscontent

  • Can Finland strengthen its forest carbon sink without economic trade-offs? 🌲🌳 Finland’s forests cover more than 75% of its land area (the largest forest resources per capita in the EU). 🌱🛠️ Tens of thousands of jobs depend on forestry and forest industries, particularly in rural areas. 📉 At the same time, the net carbon sink capacity of forests has declined in recent years. What is the way forward? Our report on the regional economic impacts of the green transition in the Nordic Region analyses 6 policy options and their impacts: 1️⃣ Increase growth 2️⃣ Reduce harvests 3️⃣ Innovate, increase efficiency and add value 4️⃣ Shift to new product palette 5️⃣ Import more 6️⃣ Implement BioCCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d7FF_vvQ #GreenTransition #SustainableForestry #RegionalDevelopment #NordicRegion

  • 🚉🚢 Freedom of movement across national borders is at the heart of Nordic collaboration. But to fully enjoy this, the transport infrastructure needs to be in place. "The current geopolitical situation has brought the need for effective cross-border transport infrastructure back into the spotlight. What I want to stress is that the key to Nordic success lies in establishing strong collaborations across borders and place-based perspectives." - Anna Lundgren at recent Platform North Forum, organised by Trafikverket So how can we enhance Nordic cross-border transport? 1️⃣A top-down approach is key. National-level political collaboration and support are essential for paving the way. 2️⃣A systems perspective is fundamental. Cross-border infrastructure planning transcends national boundaries and needs to consider the different modes of transport in that system. 3️⃣It's a question of costs and benefits. Economic figures and risk analyses are the foundation of sound decision-making. 🔗 Nordic Region is on track to enhance transport infrastructure planning. • 🛤️ Tourism as a driver of regional development – but at what cost? On #GlobalTourismResilienceDay, we highlight an often-overlooked aspect of sustainable tourism: social sustainability. Tourism can boost regional economies, but what about the people who call these places home? The Nordics are beginning to experience challenges similar to overtourism hotspots elsewhere in Europe—rising housing prices, pressure on infrastructure, and cultural shifts that impact local communities. A new Nordregio report examines how Nordic tourism policies address the social dimension of sustainability—and where there are gaps. As the sector recovers post-pandemic, now is the time to rethink how we balance growth with community well-being. 💬 “While all Nordic countries aim for sustainable tourism, few concrete actions on social sustainability are evident.” 📖 Read the full report, authored by Agust Bogason, Maja Brynteson and Lisa Rohrer to explore how tourism can be socially sustainable: https://lnkd.in/eMEh2P5Q 🔎 Stay tuned for the final report and launch event coming in early April.

  • 📊🤝🏥 Strengthening Nordic cooperation through health and welfare statistics 💡 Reliable and comparable statistics are the foundation of evidence-based policymaking. In the Nordic Region, Nomesco (🩺📉 the Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee) and Nososco (🏡📈the Nordic Social Statistical Committee) play a key role in providing high-quality health and welfare data to understand social and health trends, inform decisions, and support decision-makers, researchers, and practitioners. 💬 Nordregio was pleased to host the heads of Nomesco-Nososco delegations meeting on 14 February, bringing together key representatives to discuss the future of Nordic health and welfare statistics. 🔜 As the new Nomesco-Nososco Secretariat, Nordregio looks forward to facilitating further collaboration and supporting knowledge exchange across the Nordics. #NordicStatistics #Health #Welfare #NordicCooperation
