Co-Founder & CEO @ Steep | The BI tool for modern data leaders

🧠 It’s time we rethink BI. In my 14 years in analytics, building data teams, and using nearly every BI tool on the market, one challenge I’ve kept bumping into is that business users want answers, and data teams are stuck in an endless loop of dashboard requests and follow-ups. Last week I guested on Mark Rittman's podcast and spoke about my learnings from Spotify, iZettle, and Kry and how we’ve applied them to building Steep. I thought I’d share the biggest BI challenges I’ve seen teams struggle with: 🟠 There’s a disconnect between analysts and business users: I’ve seen highly skilled analytics engineers become dashboard service agents for business users because the BI tools at hand are too complex for non-data people. It’s an inefficient way of using everyone’s time and often creates frustration across teams. 🟠 BI tools are built for analysts: While companies are becoming more data-driven, it’s not enough that the BI tools can only be used by those who understand the data model. Most BI tools that promote self-service aspects don’t walk the talk. Your BI tool should be helping your company gain valuable insights. So why can’t the ones who need access to the data use the tools? 🟠 Dashboards are static: For years, dashboards have been the default way to deliver insights to business users. But dashboards have a serious limitation: they’re static. They answer predefined questions, but the moment a stakeholder needs to explore further or ask a follow-up question, they’re stuck. So, analysts have to spend loads of time on repetitive manual work, answering requests, preventing them from focusing on more value-adding tasks. So, you get a frustrating, inefficient cycle of endless dashboard requests and limited insights. 🟢 When we built Steep, we set out to solve these problems. Steep’s semantic layer serves as the foundation and enables metrics to be used as building blocks for all your analysis. This means anyone – whether in marketing, finance, or product – can explore and analyze data and create their own, intuitive reports without relying on an analyst. Data teams define metrics, ensuring consistency and a common language across the organization, and the rest is up to the user. The result? A systematic, efficient way of working with data, empowering the entire company to become data-driven. Listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/dT65tqpY

Tired of delivering dashboards that create more questions than answers? 🤯 Read about why the semantic layer is the next paradigm for BI. https://lnkd.in/dKgtdtfq Traditional BI tools have looked the same for as long as we can remember, and they’re not living up to promises about self-service analytics. The semantic layer allows you to give control to business users while the data team can focus on creating real impact in the organization. Steep uses the semantic layer to empower companies with (truly) self-service analytics and change how your team works with data.🚀
