How can we honour the past while designing for the future? At Sweco, we believe transformation is the key. By reimagining historic buildings, we breathe new life into cultural landmarks, ensuring they remain functional and relevant for generations to come. Transforming historic spaces is about more than preservation—it's about crafting a narrative that connects the past with the present. Our approach blends architectural expertise, sustainability and innovative design to revitalise these sites, striking a delicate balance between heritage and modern functionality. “We aim to create an identity that draws inspiration from its past. You have to respect the building's history and key qualities and use them to activate a potential that brings the story to life,” says Bjørn Mogensen, Market Manager and Creative Leader, Transformation & Renovation at Sweco Denmark. Rigtig god weekend! #TransformingSocietyTogether #dk

Did COP16 make real progress on biodiversity? Andreas Gyllenhammar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sweco, has attended the negotiations in Cali, Colombia, and offers an in-depth analysis of the outcome. Here are the main takeaways: ➡ Inclusion of indigenous people. The decision to establish a permanent subsidiary body to represent indigenous interests under the Convention is seen as a major win by indigenous groups and local communities. ➡ Benefit-sharing from genetic resources. The Cali Fund was established for the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic sources. ➡ Funding shortfalls. Negotiations stalled over the creation of a new global nature fund. Disagreements persisted regarding the governance and mobilisation of financial resources necessary to meet biodiversity targets. ➡ Unresolved monitoring framework. Delegates failed to agree on a comprehensive monitoring framework to assess progress toward biodiversity goals. Sweco has received the validation and approval of our near-term emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The climate targets cover emissions across the company’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 and are consistent with the goals of the UN Paris Agreement. As Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy, Sweco is committed to actively supporting the transition to a low-carbon society. The setting of science-based targets for the company’s own emissions reductions is one important step on Sweco’s decarbonisation pathway. In the near-term, Sweco’s science-based targets are: ➡ Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90 per cent by 2030 ➡ Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 ➡ All reductions are made against 2020 as our base year ➡ The targets are consistent with halving total emissions by 2030 “We are pleased to have our near-term climate targets validated by SBTi, confirming their alignment with what the latest climate science considers necessary to limit global warming to 1.5⁰C. This is a testimony to Sweco’s climate action ambitions. As architects and engineers, we are uniquely positioned to influence and design sustainable solutions that meet the challenges of climate change and the SBTi validation is a clear signal for our clients and suppliers to join us in transforming society together,” says Åsa Bergman, President and CEO of Sweco. Sweco’s long-term target remains to reduce emissions across the company’s value chain and to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. Nature is degrading at an alarming rate. Over the past 50 years, wildlife populations have shrunk by almost three-quarters, according to the latest research by WWF. Policy makers, scientists, civil society, journalists and the business sector all gather this week in Cali, Colombia, for the biennial UN summit on biodiversity. What are the stakes at the UN Biodiversity COP16? And what results can we expect? Sweco has been attending UNFCCC COP meetings since 2009 as an observer for the business and industry group or as a part of the Swedish delegation. This year, Andreas Gyllenhammar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sweco, attends COP16, analyses the setting and dives into the events at the UN summit. Sweco will design one of continental Europe’s largest battery parks, Green Turtle, for the energy storage company GIGA Storage Belgium. This facility will have a storage capacity of 2,800 MWh of electricity. The park will make a significant contribution to the energy grid by providing stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind energy production — thereby reducing Belgium’s reliance on gas power plants. Sweco will deliver the design of the civil engineering and electrical engineering works of the battery energy storage system (BESS). “In Belgium and across Europe, Sweco’s experts are heavily involved in the expansion of renewable energy and in the adaptation of power systems and electricity grids, to support clients in meeting new capacity requirements as electrification intensifies,” says Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President of Sweco in Belgium. “This is a flagship project for us in Belgium and an important project in realising the energy transition in Europe, where access to large-scale electricity storage plays a vital role. Sweco has been selected as our partner for the integral design because of their solid expertise in battery energy storage systems (BESS),” says Joeri Siborgs, General Manager of GIGA Storage Belgium. Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2025 with completion of the new battery park expected by 2028. Click the link for more information about the project: https://lnkd.in/dnh5APTC
