  • Sweco has been awarded contracts to provide architecture and engineering services for two major hospital projects in Germany. The projects include building a new parent-child medical care centre at the University Medical Center Göttingen and expanding and refurbishing the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg. These wins are further proof of Sweco's expertise in designing and optimising healthcare facilities. “We look forward to supporting our clients in creating state-of-the-art medical facilities with modern and innovative architectural solutions. Sweco’s team brings extensive experience in planning, designing and managing healthcare construction projects to meet the highest standards,” says Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany. Founded in 1732, the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) is one of Germany’s largest university hospitals, comprising more than 1,600 beds and 40 specialist clinical departments. As part of its redevelopment strategy, UMG is constructing a parent-child centre to enable future-oriented medical care for mother and child. In 2024, the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg and St. Theresienkrankenhaus, two teaching hospitals of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, merged to enhance their healthcare services. This requires a major redevelopment and expansion of the Martha-Maria site, consolidating all inpatient units into a modern facility with 470 beds. • Regenerative design can increase urban green-blue areas in European cities by 42 percent. A new report by Sweco highlights the potential of 22 European cities to enhance liveability, sustainability, and resilience through regenerative design in the built environment. By adopting the principles of regenerative design, these cities can increase the size of their green-blue areas by 42 percent – and align with the new EU nature restoration law related to urban ecosystems.   Sweco's experts have identified nine key elements of regenerative neighbourhoods.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4p5bdnq

  • As the global population ages, the need for thoughtful, inclusive design is more critical than ever. By 2050, nearly a quarter of the world is expected to be aged 60 or older and the built environment must evolve to meet this demographic shift. At Sweco, we’re actively involved in creating spaces that foster intergenerational connections, sustainability and community engagement. Two of our Danish projects exemplify this vision: ➡️ Gauerslund Community Centre integrates a nursing home and daycare into a single vibrant hub. This innovative design promotes daily interactions across generations with shared activity spaces, outdoor playfields and even a mini zoo. Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, it’s a shining example of inclusive, eco-conscious public architecture. ➡️ The House of Generations redefines urban living in Aarhus Docklands. By combining homes for youth, families and seniors with community spaces like cafes and daycare, it encourages meaningful connections across age groups while meeting diverse residential needs. How can we honour the past while designing for the future? At Sweco, we believe transformation is the key. By reimagining historic buildings, we breathe new life into cultural landmarks, ensuring they remain functional and relevant for generations to come. Transforming historic spaces is about more than preservation—it's about crafting a narrative that connects the past with the present. Our approach blends architectural expertise, sustainability and innovative design to revitalise these sites, striking a delicate balance between heritage and modern functionality. “We aim to create an identity that draws inspiration from its past. You have to respect the building's history and key qualities and use them to activate a potential that brings the story to life,” says Bjørn Mogensen, Market Manager and Creative Leader, Transformation & Renovation at Sweco Denmark. Explore our latest article about how our creative solutions are transforming historic sites into vibrant spaces that inspire and endure. https://lnkd.in/d6baR-bC #SwecoGroup #TransformingSocietyTogether

Rigtig god weekend! #TransformingSocietyTogether #dk

A delegation from Sweco will take part in the Rebuild Ukraine international exhibition and conference this month in Warsaw. The conference is a platform for recovery projects, materials, technologies, equipment and investments required to rebuild Ukraine’s war-torn economy with an emphasis on infrastructure, industry, energy and housing. With a portfolio that encompasses more than 70 projects, Sweco has continuously performed engineering assignments in the energy, industry, water and wastewater sectors in Ukraine over the past 30 years. This work spans district heating, building energy efficiency, residential housing and wastewater treatment, among other areas. Over the years, Sweco has developed a strong track record of successful partnerships with bilateral and multilateral donors and development banks in Ukraine, alongside a well-established network of local partners nationwide. “At Sweco, we are proud and grateful to support the rebuilding efforts in Ukraine across such vital areas as energy, water, construction, and environmental solutions. This work also presents an important opportunity to build sustainably, contributing to Ukraine’s green transition and helping create a resilient, future-ready infrastructure," says Martina Söderström, President of Sweco International. Did COP16 make real progress on biodiversity? Andreas Gyllenhammar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sweco, has attended the negotiations in Cali, Colombia, and offers an in-depth analysis of the outcome. Here are the main takeaways: ➡ Inclusion of indigenous people. The decision to establish a permanent subsidiary body to represent indigenous interests under the Convention is seen as a major win by indigenous groups and local communities. ➡ Benefit-sharing from genetic resources. The Cali Fund was established for the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic sources. ➡ Funding shortfalls. Negotiations stalled over the creation of a new global nature fund. Disagreements persisted regarding the governance and mobilisation of financial resources necessary to meet biodiversity targets. ➡ Unresolved monitoring framework. Delegates failed to agree on a comprehensive monitoring framework to assess progress toward biodiversity goals. Sweco has received the validation and approval of our near-term emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The climate targets cover emissions across the company’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 and are consistent with the goals of the UN Paris Agreement. As Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy, Sweco is committed to actively supporting the transition to a low-carbon society. The setting of science-based targets for the company’s own emissions reductions is one important step on Sweco’s decarbonisation pathway. In the near-term, Sweco’s science-based targets are: ➡ Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90 per cent by 2030 ➡ Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30 per cent by 2030  ➡ All reductions are made against 2020 as our base year ➡ The targets are consistent with halving total emissions by 2030 “We are pleased to have our near-term climate targets validated by SBTi, confirming their alignment with what the latest climate science considers necessary to limit global warming to 1.5⁰C. This is a testimony to Sweco’s climate action ambitions. As architects and engineers, we are uniquely positioned to influence and design sustainable solutions that meet the challenges of climate change and the SBTi validation is a clear signal for our clients and suppliers to join us in transforming society together,” says Åsa Bergman, President and CEO of Sweco. Sweco’s long-term target remains to reduce emissions across the company’s value chain and to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
