This inspiration is much needed, especially as the negotiations at COP29 Azerbaijan still are far from delivering what is required to create a safe and just landing zone for people and planet. The Earth Commission website hosts six explainer briefs covering safe and just boundaries for aerosols, biosphere, climate, freshwater, nutrients and justice (the newest addition). Each brief simply explains the Commission’s research on its respective area, clarifying how the work carried out on quantifying #EarthSystemBoundaries links to the notion of a planet that is #SafeAndJust for all. The inaugural Hamburg Sustainability Conference is a wrap! Two days of thought-provoking discussions pointed to ways the Pact for the Future can energize the SDG agenda. Frank and candid exchanges were a hallmark of the conference, challenging many participants to reach beyond the standard talking points. United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) had the pleasure of working with the HSC team and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as well as many civil society partners (VENRO, The ONE Campaign, The Stimson Center, Global Challenges Foundation, and our star moderator Natasha White) to co-create four #HSC24 sessions: ✅ Representing Future Generations through Long-Term Governance ✅ A Fair and Just International Financial Architecture – Options for the World Bank ✅ Letters That Matter: Aligning Credit Ratings with African Development ✅ Towards a just and fair International Financial Architecture 🤝 United Nations University was proud to join forces with UNDP and BMZ to launch the Principles on Responsible AI for the #SDGs. I had the privilege of attending an interesting and informative session on '#SolarGeoengineering: Perspectives on Risks, Governance Implications and Political Challenges' in New York last week. It was organized by Science Summit 2024 and Wageningen University & Research with the support of Global Challenges Foundation during #UNGA79. The session brought together a diverse set of speakers, including youth representatives, civil society members, leading scientists and government officials as well as representatives from multilateral institutions to discuss governance challenges and political risks and considerations of solar geoengineering. The session also explored pathways for addressing these risks through effective, inclusive and restrictive global governance mechanisms. These are the numbers that literally need to be”turned around”. It’s not that the finance disappears, it can just be spent on economic practices beneficial to nature and society, as well as still directly supporting the 10s of millions of jobs that make up this part of the global economy.
