We grow ideas that can change the world

Om oss

Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI) is a state-of-the-art biotech incubator that strives to transform ideas and innovations from academia and health care to real benefit for patients and society. In 2024 we were named one of "Europe's leading start-up hubs" by Financial Times. We do this by offering innovators a unique combination of lab facilities, business coaching, product development, team evaluation and professional expertise in acquisition of venture capital, IPR and marketing strategy. Although our office and facilities are located in the heart of northern Sweden - we evaluate ideas and projects from the whole country. Our closest partners comprise of Umeå University, Region Västerbotten (RV), Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (SLU), Norrlands Universitetssjukhus (NUS) and Försvarets forskningsinstitut (FOI). Since the start in 2003, UBI has seen the start of more than 30 companies, and our projects have a high success rate for landing financial grants from VINNOVA and other external funding. To make sure that you do not waste your time on an impossible project, we help you make those difficult decisions based on stop-and-go criteria. And when the time is right, we can coach you and your project prior to meetings with potential investors. We take no part or have any claims on the companies and business projects that develop and grow under our roof. This is possible thanks to our owners, financiers and partners. Our success is measured by the success rate of the projects which we collaborate with. Welcome to join our creative team at ubi.se

  • 17 QA SPECIALISTS GATHERED AT CYTIVA IN UMEÅ. ✨ The QA Network in Umeå is a great example of collaboration — a space where members openly share experiences and insights across company boundaries. 🎯Last week’s meeting, hosted by Cytiva, brought together 17 participants from 11 different life science companies in the area. We discussed strategies for effectively distributing quality work within organizations, and Emil Lindgren gave an insightful tour of Cytiva's impressive facilities. 🙌 We’re excited for the next meeting and continue to strengthen quality work in Life Science Umeå, where collaboration is the key to success. #umeåmerlifescience #lifescience #qualityassurance

  • MILLION GRANT TO METACURUM – COLLABORATES WITH ICR IN LONDON. ✨ Metacurum Biotech AB has been awarded one million SEK from Vinnova, under the "Acceleration of Deeptech Companies 2024" initiative.   🧫 Metacurum is developing a therapeutic antibody for treating prostate cancer and other solid tumors. The Vinnova funds will be used further to validate Metacurum's mechanism of action and product. 📣 "The support brings us closer to securing additional funding that will help us advance to clinical trials. This is also part of our collaboration with The Institute of Cancer Research in London and Professor Johan de Bono, where we will test the therapeutic antibody in his in-vitro models," explains Maarten de Château, CEO of MetaCurUm. ✅ MetaCurUm's foundation lies in Professor Marene Landstrom's research, at Umeå universitet, on a specific oncogenic TGFβ signaling pathway that cancer cells use to become invasive and metastasize. MetaCurUm aims to develop an antibody to block this pathway, thereby preventing the spread of tumor cells. 💡 The "Acceleration of Deeptech Companies 2024" initiative aims to accelerate the commercial development of awarded companies by mitigating various risks and enhancing commercial opportunities. The solutions aim to contribute to solving our greatest societal challenges. 👉 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/djzQs8Et #umeåmerlifescience #lifescience #prostatecancer

  • 🎯 REIGNING CHAMP READY FOR THE LIFE SCIENCE PUB 🏆 For the second year in a row the Life Science pub will host the UBI Boule Cup at Orangeriet Boule & Bistro (November 28). We have 16 teams in the Boule tournament and over 40 players in the (new) Dart tournament, in total almost 100 participants in the two tournaments! 👉 Check out the teams and draw at the event site: https://lnkd.in/d-wQUnZa 🥇Last year's Boule Champion, ”Dan’t even think about it” (picture), has changed its name to ”Titanic” this year. Team member Joel Blomqvist reveals why:  📣 ”Last year, we went with a pretty bold team name (after our teammate Dan), especially since no expectations were placed on us. Now that we’ve experienced how quickly a match can turn, it feels like we could be knocked out of the tournament at any moment. It would be a total disaster if we were eliminated early, which is why Titanic feels fitting. But the biggest and most amusing reason for the name change… well, I’m not sharing that here”.   📣 Tell us about the victory last year? ”It was such a shocker. None of us had ever played pétanque on a proper court or even followed the official rules, so we were pretty clueless initially. But after a few matches, we managed to come up with a strategy that carried us to victory.   What are your hopes for this year? 📣 ”Given how tight the matches were last year, aiming for first place again feels unrealistic. The scary thing about pétanque is how one great shot from the other team can flip a comfortable lead into a narrow loss. We’ll give it our all and see if we can steer clear of any icebergs on our journey to the finish line!"

  • THE MOSS MAN JOINS GLOBAL LEADERS AT UNCCD COP16 IN RIYADH. ✨ From December 2 to 13, Daniel Pacurar from Boreal Orchards (supported by Umeå Biotech Incubator) will join global leaders and present the re:moss concept at the UNCCD COP16Riyadh, a climate conference focused on combating drought and desertification. 🎯 Daniel will hold a seminar at the Innovation Stage, where he's the only invited representative from Sweden and one of five from Europe. 🌎 The UNCCD (UN Convention to Combat Desertification) COP16 is poised to accelerate investment and action to restore land and boost drought resilience globally. It targets the restoration of 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030. ❓ Daniel, what role will you play at COP16, and what key items are on your agenda? 📣 ”I will represent Boreal Orchards and re:moss and I'm one of the speakers on the Innovation Stage. Besides, I´ll take the opportunity to meet decision-makers from the public, civil society, and private sectors and discuss how we can contribute to their restoration agenda”. ❓ What specific outcomes or contributions do you anticipate from Boreal Orchards during the conference? 📣”Since founding Boreal Orchards we were "looking around" addressing challenges within the Boreal region in Northern Europe. However, our concepts and solutions can support worldwide climate adaptation and nature restoration. Therefore with growing interest in our work outside Europe, this is us "looking ahead" to how we can contribute to the bigger picture”. ❓ How can your moss-based solution contribute to combating desertification? 📣 ”re:moss is targeting nature and ecosystem restoration at scale. Restoration of post-mining landscapes is one application. By comparison, Desertification and land degradation have a significantly larger global footprint. Although we are not yet present in these areas, mosses are already working hard; for example, Australia has more moss species than Sweden”. 📣 "Using the re:moss concept and technology we want to support them and the countries and regions that face these challenges" 🎞 Swedish Mining Innovation & Swedish Metals & Minerals. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dVGx2ZxU #moss #ecotech #umeåmerlifescience
