Here’s what unfolded: 👉 Developing Nations’ Frustration: The financial package, though larger than the current $100bn, is seen as inadequate. Complaints included the reliance on loans and last-minute negotiation tactics by wealthier nations. 👉 Short-sightedness from Rich Countries: By failing to provide a more ambitious package, wealthier nations missed a chance to inspire emerging economies to accelerate emissions reductions—where 75% of emissions growth has occurred in the last decade. 👉 Geopolitical Undercurrents: With potential U.S. disengagement under a Trump presidency, commitments were designed to be “Trump-proof,” ensuring climate progress continues even amid uncertainty. 👉 China’s Quiet Ascension: China stepped up with voluntary climate finance contributions, signalling an evolving leadership role in global climate efforts. 👉 Host Controversy: Azerbaijan, like recent authoritarian hosts, drew criticism for conflicting priorities, with a focus on oil and gas at odds with COP’s mission.
