Lao PDR’s Minister of Health, HE Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith chaired a crucial engagement workshop recently in Vientiane. It brought together key stakeholders to discuss key steps that need to be taken to ensure the long-term sustainability of the country's malaria responses, including increased domestic financing and coordinated efforts between the government and private sector. This workshop saw a comprehensive review of findings from the recently completed Malaria Sustainability and Transition Readiness Assessment Report, and was instrumental in shaping Lao PDR's Sustainability and Transition Roadmap. In his address, Minister Phoummalaysith highlighted the necessity of increased domestic financing and programmatic readiness, as part of a bolstered effort towards achieving malaria elimination by 2030. This engagement marks a significant step towards a sustainable, malaria-free future in Lao PDR! #EndMalaria

As of mid-2024, around 77% of districts/cities in Indonesia have received malaria elimination certificates, while the remaining 23% are on track to achieve this target. However, Indonesia still records approximately 400,000 malaria cases annually. The recently launched roadmap on malaria elimination is expected to garner support and commitment from various partners and leaders from the country and region, to support and champion the voice of malaria elimination. In his address at the launch, Indonesia’s Minister of Health Budi G. Sadikin emphasized the crucial role of stakeholders’ collaboration to transform and scale up the malaria elimination program as a national priority. By uniting, public and private stakeholders can collaboratively ensure that Indonesia achieves its 2030 malaria elimination goal. #EndMalaria #IndonesiaMalariaRoadmap

A Major Boost in Indonesia’s Fight Against Malaria! Today in Jakarta, Minister of Health Budi G. Sadikin, Vice Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Dante S. Harbuwono, Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Special Advisor to APLMA, and Dr. Sarthak Das, CEO of APLMA, launched the Roadmap for Malaria Elimination and Prevention of Re-Establishment 2025-2045. This milestone event was attended by over 100 partners and stakeholders. The roadmap aims to eliminate malaria by 2030, prevent the re-establishment of transmission, and create a malaria-free golden generation in Indonesia. Developed by the Ministry of Health with support from APLMA, this comprehensive plan was crafted through consultations with various ministries, technical experts, and organizations from both the public and private sectors. In particular, it pens down intervention strategies focused on key regions such as Papua and Nusantara Capital City. The journey to elimination is not without challenges. Climate change and the need for sustainable financing and resources are key issues to address. However, the roadmap has in place a holistic approach to strengthen leadership through political commitment, coordinated multi-sectoral support, and elevate regional and global collaboration to overcome these obstacles and reach the end goal. Together, we can achieve malaria elimination in Indonesia and Asia Pacific! #EndMalaria #IndonesiaMalariaRoadmap

It’s no mean feat for Indonesia to certify 389 of its 514 districts as malaria-free. However, a critical 47% funding gap threatens to undo the achievement – as we’ve seen in 2023, where indigenous malaria cases more than doubled since 2015. Prof. Dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono, Deputy Minister of Health, delivered an opening address at the Malaria Financing Consultative Forum, held on 9 September 2024, as the Guest of Honour. Private sector and philanthropic entities in Indonesia were invited to the forum to discuss support for the launch of an Indonesia Malaria Financing Facility (IMFF) that can bridge this funding gap. Their support will not only advance malaria elimination efforts, but also further the Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision and broader Sustainable Development Goals in health, nutrition, and education. Together, public and private stakeholders can bridge the funding gap and help ensure we meet Indonesia’s 2030 malaria elimination goal. #EndMalaria #Financing

Echoing Michael Adekunle Charles sentiments at the Leaders’ Summit, there’s a sense of hope in the malaria world to #EndMalaria through: ✅ Additional funding to better equip entomologists to collect more data for future malaria elimination strategy planning. ✅ Development of new tools, such as leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for the surveillance and tracking of malaria cases, for countries to have a real-time overview of the local malaria situation and where the challenges are from. ✅ Deployment of preventative tools e.g. Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) by on-ground workers/ malaria champions, and to conduct malaria programs. #WorldMosquitoDay #ZeroMalaria #MalariaLeaders

The annual World Mosquito Day 🌏🦟📅 , which falls on 20 August, gives us the opportunity to dive deeper into vector-borne diseases (VBDs), which include mosquito-borne diseases. With similarities in transmission, integrated approaches are possible and necessary to ensure efficiencies in eliminating VBDs in the region.
