The SIAC-CIArb Debate 2024, jointly organized by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and the Ciarb Singapore Branch, took place on Wednesday, 6 November 2024 at Maxwell Chambers. The debate sparked lively discussion on a pressing topic in international arbitration: Debate Motion: This House believes that two hats are better than one in international arbitration. As the debate unfolded, we explored whether practitioners who switch between counsel and arbitrator roles enhance their skills in both areas, or if "double-hatting" presents significant conflicts—especially in investment arbitration. The panel tackled crucial questions on the potential issue conflicts and the adequacy of UNCITRAL Working Group III’s code of conduct in addressing these concerns. The night was capped off with a MOU signing ceremony and a fantastic evening of food and drinks. It was an evening full of healthy competitive spirit, engaging dialogue, and entertaining exchanges.
