Many people think of financial exclusion in binary terms—either you have a bank account, or you don’t. However, the reality is much more complex. The truth is, financial exclusion exists on a spectrum ↔️, encompassing a range of experiences and challenges: 👨👩👧👧 Unbanked: Many undocumented individuals like refugees, immigrants and rural communities, face significant barriers to accessing traditional banking services, leaving them vulnerable and without a safety net. 💵 Underbanked: Low income households or citizens from developing countries with bank account, often rely on cash transactions and have limited access to affordable financial resources. 🧑🏻💻Underserved: Freelancers, gig workers, MSMEs, and women, often rely on alternative financial services like payday loans or check-cashing due to limited access to financial services adapted to their situation or persistent gender bias. This spectrum illustrates that there are far more individuals being left out of the financial system than we might traditionally assume. Each group faces unique challenges that require tailored solutions to bridge the gap. It’s crucial for us as advocates for financial inclusion to recognize and address these nuances.💡 By understanding the diverse experiences of those who are underbanked, we can develop more effective strategies to bring everyone into the fold of the financial system. ––––––––––––––––––––––––– Check out how you can give to the underserved: https://lnkd.in/dbmUyKrw Join the Defiant community on X: https://lnkd.in/ejYb9aTf #Defy #DefiantForGood #FintechForInclusion #FinancialInclusion #FinTech #Defiant #FintechForGood Sebastien P. | Eelee Lua | Julia Chin 陈碧茹 | Shi Mei Chin | Beatrix Tay | Holly Smith

  • 🌟 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 🌟 Last week, we brought together an incredible group of corporate leaders to explore how innovative partnerships can unlock value for businesses and drive real impact through our impact banking solution. From finance and marketing to CSR and operations, it was an enriching discussion. Here are 3 key takeaways from the morning: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Creating inclusive and impactful finance solutions requires taking a step back and looking at why the pain point you're trying to solve exists in the bigger picture of things. When it comes to financing and funding for impact, the participants considered where impact banking fits in the existing systems. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Whilst we all have multiple causes we care about (gender inequality, plastic pollution, fighting financial crime), efforts to make a difference must own a vertical to make a tangible impact. This is true whether a non-profit programme or a for-profit business. 3️⃣ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 To solve wicked problems and to drive innovation, partnerships are essential. In solutions like impact banking theres a role for financial institutions, corporate partners, regulators, and retail banking customers to come together and mobilise capital towards impactful initiatives. Figuring out how it all comes together is the art! A huge thank you to all who joined and shared their insights! Caitlin Medley, Clare Woodford, Kathrene M., Michael Gilmore, Michael Weng 翁漢麟, Pauline Wray, Roger Charles. The dialogue was energising, dynamic, and we’re excited to turn these ideas into action. 💡 We are actively looking for purposeful collaborations in the impact project we are building. Do you know how financial exclusion is making life tougher for migrant workers? Here's how TLDR 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Approximately 40 million migrants in Asia and the Middle East are unbanked, limiting their ability to save, invest, and remit money. • Did you know that financial inclusion can significantly impact migrants seeking to integrate into a new country? By promoting financial inclusion, host countries can help migrants transition from informal to formal economic activities, fostering greater integration and protecting them from the vulnerabilities associated with the shadow economy. This approach creates more opportunities for migrants to contribute to and benefit from the host economy fully, promoting social and economic cohesion.
