Using #AI to deliver better health and wealth solutions – it’s what Prudential plc aims to do with its global AI lab in Singapore. The new lab, developed with support from Ministry of Digital Development and Information, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and EDB, will accelerate the adoption of AI and machine learning within the organisation. It will prioritise solutions that improve consumer access to quality healthcare, drive operational excellence and boost advisory capabilities of financial representatives. The Lab will be staffed by a dedicated team of AI engineers and data scientists based in Singapore. Prudential CEO Anil Wadhwani said Singapore was picked as the location for the global AI lab for its “robust infrastructure and supportive environment for AI innovation, highlighted by its National AI Strategy”. The Lab intends to spur co-innovation, and will engage students from National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Republic Polytechnic, and Singapore Polytechnic to foster knowledge-sharing and nurture the next generation of AI experts. Data centre firm Equinix has broken ground on its sixth International Business Exchange (IBX®) facility in Singapore. The US$260m data centre will be powered by renewable energy and provide liquid cooling capability to support compute-intensive workloads, including AI. SG6 will be part of Equinix’s global network of 268 IBX® data centres, facilitating low-latency, high-bandwidth connections between #AI resources and #data sources. This capability is valuable for enterprises seeking to use AI at scale, and SG6 will enhance data connectivity for both local and regional businesses to drive economic value in the region. In line with Singapore’s Green Data Centre Roadmap, SG6 will adopt a variety of sustainability innovations – including a renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sembcorp Industries Ltd and the use of lower-carbon building materials, energy-efficient water-cooled chillers and rainwater harvesting systems. Sustainable data centres are essential for Singapore-based enterprises to capture new opportunities, as Southeast Asia’s digital economy continues its growth trajectory. HCLTech has launched a new AI lab in Singapore, its regional hub, to service the growing number of companies embracing #AI and #GenAI to unlock new business value. The Indian global #technology company, which has been in Singapore for over four decades, will work with a diversity of businesses such as those in financial services and logistics on use cases of these emerging technologies. It will develop local AI #talent through a partnership with Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic, training and hiring 50 first-year students and mid-career talent over a three-year period. HCLTech will also help train academic staff, exposing them to the current business and industry requirements around AI to contribute to curriculum programmes. The new lab adds to the company’s global network of AI labs across India, UK, US, and Germany. HCLTech’s investment comes as Singapore continues building on efforts to help companies adopt and innovate with AI across sectors including financial services, manufacturing, and more. I attended the unveiling of Singtel’s AI Cloud Service, which provides the critical compute infrastructure necessary for the advancement and widespread adoption of AI in Singapore.   AI has the potential to transform our economy, enhance our scientific research and create high-value jobs for Singaporeans. I was pleased to note that SingTel is embarking on five Memoranda of Understanding with global AI leaders, local research and academic institutions, and Digital Industry Singapore (DISG) to nurture a dynamic AI ecosystem, spur innovation, and cultivate AI talent. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will open its APAC hub in #Singapore later this year. It will advance partnerships with local and regional governments, businesses and institutions, supporting the company’s growth across the region from its base in Singapore. OpenAI will also partner with AI Singapore to make advanced #AI more widely accessible across #SoutheastAsia, providing US$1m to help develop resources, including open datasets, that will enable the creation of models better suited to the region's diverse languages and cultures. EDB, Digital Industry Singapore (DISG) and other government agencies look forward to working with Open AI and other leading edge AI companies to spark new collaborations and ideas that will shape the future of AI in the region.
