Nearly three-quarters of children aged 3–4 in low- and middle-income countries are missing essential support for healthy development. The new Lancet Series stresses the urgency of action, calling for investments in high-quality early childhood care and #education. 👇
The ‘next 1,000 days’ (ages 2-5) are a critical time to build on early childhood development. However, 181.9 million children—almost three quarters of children aged 3-4 years old in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs)—lack adequate support for their healthy development. In a new Lancet Series, authors call for increased investment, with a focus on increasing children’s access to high quality early childhood care and education, to ensure children in the next 1000 days receive: - Continuity of parenting and caregiver support - Attention to adequate nutrition - Access to healthcare - Universal developmental screenings followed by the necessary referral & support services - Financial support - Engagement and support for caregivers by all sectors Read the Series papers: 1️⃣ https://hubs.li/Q02Y46Gs0 2️⃣ https://hubs.li/Q02Y4zZ00 Figure: Developmental outcomes and inputs of nurturing care in the next 1000 days.
