I visited PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP)'s two new open cycle gas turbines sites at Jurong island. It was only less than a year ago that EMA selected PLP to provide fast start generation capacity, and they are already here, installed and ready for commissioning. These fast-start power generation units will strengthen Singapore's energy reliability by ensuring that power supply can be ramped up quickly, in less than 30 minutes, during unexpected disruptions. PLP's fast-start generation units are on track to serve our power system's needs by the second quarter of this year. These units are also hydrogen-ready, for a more sustainable future when we can tap on cleaner energy sources. As announced by PM Wong at Budget 2025, another $5 billion will be added the Future Energy Fund. This will help support Singapore’s efforts to secure clean power, be it electricity imports, hydrogen or nuclear. EMA will also be studying the potential deployment of nuclear power. It remains an area of interest given the significant advancements in nuclear technologies. Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gTbUQN8U

In his essay for the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Agenda, our Chief Executive, Kok Keong Puah shared his vision for accelerating the transition to clean, secure, and affordable energy in Southeast Asia. By 2050, renewables could meet more than two-thirds of the region’s energy needs. This potential could be unlocked by the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) which seeks to connect power grids throughout Southeast Asia. Read more about how Southeast Asia has the potential to lead the global energy transition at https://lnkd.in/gy3NigME.

In a panel discussion at the Liquefied Natural Gas Supplies for Asian Markets conference, I spoke about the challenges for Singapore in ensuring a secure, stable and cost-competitive supply of energy. These challenges become far more complex as Singapore is alternative energy-disadvantaged and has a net-zero goal to meet. While we transition to more renewable energy sources, we also need to ensure energy security and reliability at all times. This means natural gas will continue to be a key energy source for our long-term energy security as we explore other energy sources to meet our needs. My thanks to Conference Connection and FGE for inviting me to speak at this event. It was an insightful session with the exchange of ideas and perspectives with fellow industry leaders on the fast-evolving energy landscape we are in. Thanks also to Alexis Aik for moderating the session. Energy Market Authority (EMA) FGE
