On Wednesday, 19 February, EuroCham’s Human Development Committee organised an engaging workshop on “Overview of Workplace Fairness Legislation (WFL) and Fair Employment Practices with Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP)” Our sincere gratitude to our distinguished speakers—Mr Jason Chan (TAFEP Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices) and Mr Sebastian Blasius (Gateway Law Corporation)—for sharing their expertise on the evolving workplace fairness landscape and its impact on businesses. The discussion provided key insights into the Workplace Fairness Legislation (WFL), a new legal framework designed to prevent workplace discrimination based on “protected characteristics” such as age, gender, race, religion, or disability. Our speakers explored how the legislation promotes merit-based recruitment, strengthens employee protections, and introduces clear guidelines for fair employment practices. Participants also engaged in a thought-provoking fireside chat, raising critical questions on how businesses can align current practices with the new legal requirements. On Tuesday, 18 February, EuroCham’s Sustainability Committee organised an engaging event on “Article 6 in focus: Outcomes from COP29”. Our gratitude goes to our esteemed speakers — Mr Federico Di Credico (ACT Group), Ms Deanna Tan (Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore)), and Dr. Kalpana Seethepalli (Deutsche Bank) — for sharing their insights on governance, international collaboration, and emissions reduction efforts. The discussion centred on the advancements made during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, particularly concerning Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which facilitates international cooperation through carbon markets to achieve global climate objectives. The speakers delved into the operationalisation of Articles 6.2 and 6.4, key mechanisms that facilitate bilateral carbon trading agreements and establish a UN-regulated global carbon market, ensuring transparency and accountability in emissions reductions. Singapore’s active participation in over 20 negotiations under Article 6 highlights its leadership in carbon pricing and sustainable finance. The event also underscored the increasing role of carbon removal and nature-based solutions, presenting both opportunities and challenges for businesses and policymakers navigating the evolving carbon market landscape.
