Seedlings incoming! Today, the JNBS team, together with colleagues from the ARUPA team and KTH Argo Makmur Lestari, welcomed the first batch of seedlings. These include mango, coffee and banana. The seedlings will temporarily undergo a one-week quarantine phase to ensure that no diseases are transmitted. This is the first phase of the planting for our 25 ha agroforestry demo plot in East Java. We hope the little ones will get used to their new surroundings quickly and are very excited to start the planting soon. #indonesia #naturebasedsolution #agroforestry #regenerativeagroforestry #banana #coffee #mango

We are now in the middle of the planting season in #Indonesia! In our new project area in South Sumatra, our team has started to develop #cocoa #agroforestry systems with local smallholders. The cocoa trees prefer semi-shady locations and can benefit from the shade provided by fruit trees such as durian, petai and avocado. Our directors Charles Iwan Tanaka and Paul Schüller visited the planting site to get an impression of our fruitful collaboration. We are very excited to see how the saplings develop over the next few weeks. Stay tuned! 🥑 🍫 🍌 #agroforestry #cocoa #smallholder #indonesia

We are now in the middle of the planting season in Indonesia! A key success factor for a successful season is the #planning process. We were supported by experts from @AruPa who helped us develop technical planting patterns based on each farmer's crop selection and adapted to the planting conditions of each plot. The pictures below give some impressions of our #agroforestry design sessions, where we discussed and fine-tuned the proposed planting patterns. We are now looking forward to the actual implementation and are excited to see our planning come to fruition! 🍈🍊🥑🍌 #agroforestry #regenerativeagroforestry #smallholders #indonesia #naturebasedsolutions

The growing interest in a still nascent asset class, Natural Climate Solutions, continues! 🌱 Last week, our CEO Paul Schüller attended the Ecosperity week in Singapore. During the Asia Climate Solutions Design Grant Showcase event jointly organised by Convergence Blended Finance and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) we were invited to present our business case and received very positive feedback. With our strong project pipeline, we remain focussed on bringing sizable investment opportunities related to social forestry in Indonesia to the market. A big thank you to the organisers and the invitation to speak at the event! #naturebasedsolutions #agroforestry #impactinvesting #blendedfinance #asia #asiapacific #southeastasia #singapore #indonesia #Ecosperity #EcosperityWeek2024 #climatefinance
Last week, Convergence was on the ground in Singapore at Ecosperity Week participating in and attending a variety of events, including: - A Showcase Event in partnership with Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) where we featured the inaugural cohort of grantees from the Asia Climate Solutions (ACS) Design Grant and shared insights on scaling nature-based solutions with blended finance - An interactive workshop organized by Convergence in partnership UNDP, with a hands-on case exercise on structuring a blended finance transaction targeting climate adaptation - UBS Action Showcase on The New Economy – for People and Planet where our CEO Joan M. Larrea shared insights on blended finance for nature and biodiversity - A presentation at the Ecosperity Action Hub on the role of design funding and the ACS Design Grant - A Convergence member networking event, hosted by the Australian High Commission, Singapore, which gave Convergence members and partners an opportunity to reconnect, exchange ideas, discuss blended finance initiatives, and more A big thank you to all our partners at Ecosperity week! Stay tuned for more key takeways from the event. #blendedfinance #asia #asiapacific #southeastasia #singapore #Ecosperity #EcosperityWeek2024 #climate #climateadaptation #climatefinance Fairventures Social Forestry

We are delighted to share with you that we are part of Co-Axis, a new digital catalytic capital marketplace initiated by Temasek Trust, DBS Bank Foundation and UBS Optimus Foundation. Co-Axis connects funders with early-stage businesses, charitable organisations, and blended-finance projects to unlock risk capital and harness the power of community to scale and accelerate impact innovations with strong impact potential. “As an agroforestry project developer and financier, securing patient capital from like-minded grantors and investors is key for us. We strongly believe the Co-Axis platform fills a significant market gap, as it enables us to efficiently connect with different types of grantors and investors through one digital platform,” said Paul Schüller, our CEO, in the press release. An important part of our cooperation with smallholders in Indonesia is to support them in establishing regenerative agroforestry systems by creating sustainable and secure incomes through long-term Offtake Cooperation Agreements (OCA). We are therefore happy to announce that our teams in Sumatra and Java have both recently signed their first OCAs with their local project partners. PT Sumatra NBS (SNBS) will partner with the farmer group Sumber Jaya (SJ) in East Lampung (Sumatra). PT Java NBS (JNBS) will work with KTH AML. The OCA forms the legal basis for the long-term cooperation until 2056. As part of the cooperation, we will provide production inputs (e.g. cocoa seedlings) and field training, while the smallholders of SJ and KTH AML will implement the agreed agroforestry systems. Eventually, SNBS and JNBS will purchase the harvested products from the farmer groups and sell them to the processing companies. In this way, we can pay attractive prices to the producers, in this case the smallholders of SJ and KTH AML, due to the shortened value chain. We are very much looking forward to a long-term collaboration! #agroforestry #regenerativeagrogorestry #smallholders #indonesia #sustainableagriculture #naturebasedsolution

The planting season has now officially started! Here you can see a few impressions of our plantations in Sumatra. This year we are mainly planting new cocoa trees there. We will first plant a test area of around 13 hectares to gain initial experience in the new area and ensure the high quality of our cocoa beans in the long term. Cocoa trees prefer shady locations. We therefore plant them in agroforestry systems. This means that the small cocoa trees are combined with various fruit trees, such as avocado, durian or banana, in order to obtain shade from the taller fruit trees. We look forward to seeing how the fields develop over the next few weeks. #indonesia #smallholders #agroforestry #regenerativeagroforestry #naturebasedsolution #cocoa

Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest areas of rainforest. Although these are so valuable in the fight against climate change, around 14 million hectares have already been degraded. This is exactly where we wanted to start when we launched our first project area in Kalimantan in 2019 to restore degraded areas with regenerative agroforestry systems and thus bring them back into sustainable economic use. Our colleague Tisha Ramadhini recently went on a field trip there with investors. In the article below, she summarises some of her impressions of this trip in Central Kalimantan. A very impressive article! “The trip was not merely a showcase for investors; it was a collective wake-up call. Environmental protection isn't a luxury, it's an imperative. We must choose wisely, and sustainably, and stand with communities on the frontlines. This isn't just a job for me, it's a movement.” #indonesia #regenerativeagroforestry #naturebasedsolution
Inspired by recent field trip, a reminder for all of us. #kalimantan #rainforest #climatecrisis
