He mentioned it 6 times. Without trust: - People won't believe in you - No one will work with you - Nothing gets accomplished When folks don't trust themselves, they won't trust you either. Result? Both sides struggle. 2. The power of presence Seetha Cristian shared a gem: Presence isn't about fear. It's about: - Sense of belonging - Courage - Confidence in how others see you Her advice? Practice. Stop those negative self-thoughts. 3. Talk with impact Geraldine nailed it: The way you talk makes all the difference. Speak with: - Power - Sincerity - Integrity - Respect 4. Give others space Another nugget from Reuben. Don't obsess over outcomes. Instead: - Let others park their thoughts - Improve connections - Build mutual respect 5. [A Hamburger or Sandwich and not a Slap] I would prefer a hamburger or a sandwich anytime Definitely not a slap. A slab of meat on a platter is a different thing altogether. During performance evaluation, what would you serve? If you can't serve everything good on a platter, consider serving a sandwich or hamburger instead. Bread or bun is safe, right? Most people won't turn it down. So, start off safely with the context and something positive. That you remember the goals that were discussed earlier in the year and how the team member's on track to achieving them. Now, the heavy part. Something happened. Things got derailed. Of course, as the boss, you are upset at how things turned out and how it affected the individual's and team's overall performance. But you are a leader. You cannot vent your frustrations on the team member. Yet, you have to set things right. Corrective actions. How to tell it to the staff? Or make him realize that he could and should make tweaks so that the outcome would be different. So, you can just serve the meat. Say it as it is. No need to rub it in. Don't call a spade, a spade (if you are not sure it is a spade or a relative of it). And anyway, we are not doing gardening now. We are eating, so what's a spade got to do with it? Ask what the staff thinks of the meat? Given a chance, would the meat be changed to a different cut, to impossible meat with seasoning or without, with or without sauce, gravy or dressing? Garnish or leave it? The heavy over, serve the bun. The carbs to feel good. We'll be on track again. Performance evaluation could be a piece of cake or a game.
